Two very depleted sides will lock horns on Sunday as Ligue 1 leaders PSG clash with a struggling Lyon outfit at the Groupama Stadium. The kick-off is scheduled for 2:45 PM EST.
Paris throttled Vannes 4-0 last Monday in the Coupe de France Round of 32 but they did struggle in their last league fixture on December 22nd, sharing the spoils with 19th spot Lorient. Lyon on the other hand also played to a draw prior to Christmas with Metz and hasn’t won since latter November.
These two sides already met in September, with Paris running out as 2-1 winners at the Parc des Princes.

Lyon in Poor Form
After a fourth-place finish last term, it’s been a much different story this time around for Lyon. They’re currently in 13th in the table and have severely felt the absence of Memphis Depay, who left for Barcelona last summer. Peter Bosz’s side is looking rather toothless in the final third, bagging a mere 26 goals in 18 games. The attack has struggled even more lately, netting just twice in their previous three outings.

Although Olympique Lyonnais isn’t losing a lot right now, the side hasn’t collected a full three points since November 28th against Montpellier. Since, Lyon has drawn four times and lost once. This will be their first league fixture in over two weeks after the winter break and they will, unfortunately, be missing several key players.

"3 players are with their countries for the Africa Cup of Nations. I started with 9 players at the start of the year, but several players have resumed training since, even if some have only had two sessions." pic.twitter.com/wtyVLXipio— Olympique Lyonnais 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@OL_English) January 7, 2022
Attackers Tino Kadewere, Karl Toko Ekambi, and Islam Slimani are all with their countries at the Africa Cup of Nations, while leading goal-getter Lucas Paqueta tested positive for COVID-19 before the turn of the year. On a more positive note though, Les Gones play a lot better on home soil, going 4-4-1 this term and scoring in every single game.
PSG’s Squad in Shambles
Mauricio Pochettino’s group couldn’t be more shorthanded for this match, with a total of 11 players absent due to various reasons. Lionel Messi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Angel Di Maria, and Neymar, among others, are all unavailable. Messi recently tested negative for COVID, but it appears he won’t be fit enough to feature.

Also, Achraf Hakimi, Abou Diallo, and Idrissa Gueye are at AFCON for the next month. The only notable first-team members who are actually available are Sergio Ramos and Kylian Mbappe. However, PSG is currently 10 points clear at the top of the table ahead of Sunday’s encounter.
Their form is dwindling though, drawing three times and winning only twice in their last five appearances. A Coupe de France shellacking of fourth-tier outfit Vannes on Monday was much-needed, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a hat-trick in the process. In that game, Pochettino went with a front three of Gini Wijnaldum, Mbappe, and Xavi Simons. Mauro Icardi will likely replace Simons but as a whole, this starting XI will be the same on Sunday.

Despite being short handed, Paris has enjoyed the utmost success against Lyon, winning five of their last six meetings. They’ve also beaten their rivals in two straight at Groupama Stadium.

Lyon vs PSG Prediction
There’s a lot of important pieces sidelined for both sides here, but it certainly helps that Mbappe is leading the line for PSG. With Champions League football creeping up, I expect Paris to rise to the occasion and continue their recent dominance of Lyon. The visitor’s backline remains strong which means they could keep a clean sheet as well, especially with Lyon missing several attackers.
