Everton Playing Phenomenal Football

Carlo Ancelotti is one of the more successful managers in Europe and it was only a matter of time until he revamped this Everton squad. It was a busy summer for the Toffees, bringing in Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez, midfielder Allan from Napoli, and Abdoulaye Doucoure from Watford.

All three have looked tremendous for their new club, especially Rodriguez. The former Real Madrid star has reinvented himself at Goodison Park, already bagging three goals and tallying two assists in four matches.

The most impactful player on the pitch for Ancelotti though has been a long-time player at the club, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who currently leads the Premier League with six goals to his name. The 23-year old has really found his top form so far, looking extremely dangerous at all times in the final third. The addition of Rodriguez to the Toffees attack has helped the Englishmen flourish, as the Colombian loves to thread balls to Calvert-Lewin as he makes ambitious runs in behind defenders.

Everton’s backline has also been rock solid, conceding just five goals thus far. Center-backs Yerry Mina and Michael Keane will face their first real test in the Merseyside Derby this weekend though against a vibrant Liverpool frontline who have boatloads of talent and goal-scoring ability.

Can Liverpool Repeat?

The Reds ran away with the Premier League title last season, winning by an 18-point margin over second-place Manchester City. That being said, they haven’t looked near as dominant so far this term, getting outplayed on Matchday one against newly-promoted Leeds, despite winning 4-3.

Then in their last time out, Aston Villa embarrassed Jurgen Klopp’s side, putting seven past the Reds in a 7-2 lopsided victory for Dean Smith’s men.

Liverpool are 3-0-1 to this point, but they just haven’t looked convincing. The signings of midfield maestro Thiago Alcantara and former Wolves star Diogo Jota will surely help this squad be more lethal moving forward, but what was considered one of the top backlines in the world has been underwhelming.

Villa was a team on the brink of relegation in 2019/20 and although the Lions added several new players, there’s no way the Reds should be conceding seven goals. However, it’s still very early in the season and it’s just one defeat. A lot can change over the course of the year.

Manchester City Looking to Return as Champions

Defending was a massive issue for City last season. With this in mind, the club went out and signed two great defenders in the summer, bringing in Bournemouth standout Nathan Ake and Benfica defender Ruben Dias.

Although the results haven’t shown for it yet with a 1-1-1 record, it will take time for these new players to gel together. Dias arrived just before their last fixture against Leeds and played immediately, showing a ton of promise despite barely even training with his new club yet.

We’re all aware of how much talent Pep Guardiola’s squad has in the final third, from Raheem Sterling to arguably the best playmaking midfielder in the world, Kevin De Bruyne. The addition of Valencia starlet Ferran Torres out wide should give City even more versatility on the attack as well. Sergio Aguero is set to return after suffering a gruesome knee injury in June, which gives the Citizens back their most clinical finisher over the last number of years.

Best Bet

Everton has looked outstanding, there’s no doubt about it. I do believe they could even finish in the top four considering the type of football they’ve been playing. Their squad is strong, but labeling them as title favorites is slightly premature.

Liverpool and Manchester City will once again battle it out for the Premier League title. But after winning it all last term, I honestly believe the Reds won’t have the same hunger as City. Even though they’ve gotten off to a slow start, I think Manchester City should be considered the current title favorites. Their defensive reinforcements will pay off.

Best Bet: Manchester City (+150)
