After beating Barcelona in the El Clasico over the weekend,  the latest La Liga odds have Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid as the odds-on favorite to win the league this season, overtaking Barcelona in first place by one point. It was Madrid’s first Clasico victory against their Spanish rivals since April of 2016.

Second-half goals from Vinicius Jr. and substitute Mariano secured the win for the home side, despite Barcelona controlling 56-percent of the possession in the match.

Madrid Take Crucial Lead in Title Race

The two Spanish giants have been going head to head all year long at the top of the table but for most of this term, Barca had a slight edge of one or two points over their Madrid rivals. Going into Sunday’s clash, Zidane’s men knew how important it was to come out with a positive result on home soil. With their supporters behind them, Los Blancos came through with a crucial victory and are now one point ahead of Quique Setien’s side.

After a disappointing defeat against Man City mid-week in European competition, Madrid responded in the best way possible on Sunday. Even though both of their goals were relatively lucky, they looked a lot better in the second half of this fixture, making the necessary adjustments at halftime. Madrid looked a lot more threatening in the final third in the last 45 and the added pressure resulted in two goals to put them ahead for good.

Barca Struggled to Put Away Chances

Barca had three clear-cut chances to bag at least one or two goals in the first half, with Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann failing to bury the ball in the back of the net. But that’s football and more often than not, both of these players always capitalize on their opportunities. It just wasn’t Barca’s day, however, the title race is still in their reach.

Madrid is Best Bet

Real Madrid seemed to have more fire in their squad during this match, creating a lot more opportunities than their opponents. The energy of the home crowd behind them definitely helped them in this victory as well. Barca and Madrid won’t meet again this season, so every single match will be important for each side as they chase the La Liga title.

Madrid hasn’t won it all since Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus after the 2016-17 season, but I do believe they have what it takes this season. Although Barca has scored more goals than Madrid, Zidane’s backline has conceded 14 fewer goals than Barcelona. Their midfield has also looked a lot more consistent this year, with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric providing brilliance on a weekly basis.

Sure, Barca has Lionel Messi. But one player can only do so much and unfortunately, he can’t stop opponents from scoring goals as well. The absence of Suarez up top has also hurt them because along with Messi, the Uruguayan was one of their most clinical finishers.

Madrid showed a lot of guts and heart on Sunday in an extremely important win. It’s going to be a dogfight until the end, but I do think Zinedine Zidane’s squad will lift the La Liga trophy this year.
