Los Blancos in Fine Form

It has been a difficult campaign for Real but a timely upturn in form for Zinedine Zidane’s men as the season nears its conclusion has left them in the hunt for a La Liga and Champions League double. An unbeaten run in La Liga since the end of January has left them just three points behind leaders Atletico Madrid with nine games to play, and a fine midweek win over Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal has given them a great chance of making it to the semifinals.

In La Liga, Los Blancos have won seven and drawn three of their last ten, and last weekend ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Eibar – goals from Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema. Generally, Real’s home form has been good but it is worth noting that three of their four defeats this season have been at home, with an empty Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium proving far less intimidating to opponents than a packed Bernabéu.

Champions League Semifinal Incoming for Real?

Real’s solid home form was in evidence in the Champions League on Tuesday when the emphatic 3-1 win over Liverpool, in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie, put them in pole position ahead of the return leg at Anfield on April 14.

Even minus the services of their two regular center-backs – Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos – they made light work of Jurgen Klopp’s men; goals from Vinicius Junior (2) and Asensio.

No Champions League for Barca

With Barca already knocked out of the Champions League – they were beaten over two legs by Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 – they have had a ‘free’ week and so will, on paper at least, be fresher than Real going into the game. Whether the extra prep time will work in favor of Ronald Koeman’s men will only become clear on matchday but their 1-0 win over Real Valladolid on Monday was a timely boost to their title hopes.

The Catalans left it late against Valladolid though, and it took an Ousmane Dembele goal in the 90th minute to finally earn those three vital points, but the celebrations at the end emphasized the importance of the win, especially with Atleti losing 1-0 on Sunday in Sevilla. With Diego Simeone’s team showing signs of wobbling under the pressure and facing a tough away trip to sixth-placed Real Betis on Sunday evening, it is conceivable they could be knocked off the top spot by the time Matchday 30 is concluded.

Barca’s season, like Real’s, has been a difficult one at times but they are unbeaten in La Liga since the start of December when they lost to Cadiz, and thanks to Dembele’s late winner they come into this huge game off the back of six straight La Liga wins. On their last away trip they hammered Real Sociedad 6-1, but bettors may consider it worth noting that three of their four defeats this season have come on the road.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona Best Bets

Real’s recent record against their greatest rivals is a good one, winning their last two meetings including a 3-1 win at the Camp Nou back in October, but this, like so many El Clasicos, will be a game that is won and lost by fine margins. The Messi factor can never be ignored and that, coupled with an extra couple of days to prepare could be the deciding factor here. With Barca still in plus money, for me, there is still value in the away win. Also worthy of a look is the Asian handicap with Barca based on a -1 goal handicap.
