Roma will face a daunting task for their Europa League semifinal second leg on Thursday, May 6, 2021 against Manchester United.

After heading into halftime of the reverse fixture with a 2-1 lead, the Italians completely folded in the second period. The Red Devils ultimately hit Roma for five goals in the last 45 to lead 6-2 on aggregate as they head into this game with loads of confidence.

While Roma is winless in their last six appearances, Man United has tasted defeat just once in 22 matches across all competitions.

Uphill Climb for Roma

Needless to say, this is going to be an extremely difficult hill to climb for the hosts on Thursday. Not only are they down by four goals, but the side also lost three starters at Old Trafford last week with Leonardo Spinazzola, Jordan Veretout, and goalkeeper Pau Lopez exiting due to injuries in the first half.

All of these players were sidelined in Roma’s 2-0 defeat to Sampdoria over the weekend and aren’t expected to suit up for this clash. Lopez, whose been the first-string choice in between the sticks, needs to undergo shoulder surgery and will, unfortunately, miss the remainder of the season.

On top of the countless physical issues, Paulo Fonseca’s men are frankly playing dreadful football currently. They’ve won just three of their previous 11 fixtures. The loss to Sampdoria really cut down any hope of potentially making a Europa spot for next season, now sitting in seventh place and a whole nine points off Lazio for the final placing.

Missing out on Europe won’t bode well for their next manager in Jose Mourinho either, who is set to take over in Rome this summer after Tuesday’s announcement.

Making a comeback in this second leg is quite unlikely, but two away goals do play in their favor. The Giallorossi will need Borja Mayoral to step up and break his cold streak in the final third. The Spaniard leads the squad with 15 competitive goals and seven in Europa, which makes him the joint top-scorer in the competition.

However, he was left out last week but with Veretout out, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him either start or come on as a substitute to add some attacking firepower.

United Flying High

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is really in top form. They can’t seem to lose right now, but, the Red Devils head into this game having not played over the weekend. Their meeting with Liverpool was postponed on Sunday after fans stormed the pitch at Old Trafford in protest of the Glazer family, who initially agreed to the proposed European Super League.

Nevertheless, Man United won’t be the least bit stressed for Thursday. The English outfit hasn’t lost on the road in Europa this season, having beaten Real Sociedad, AC Milan, and Granada in the previous stages. In the process, United hasn’t conceded once in any of these matches, while netting seven times.

From a health standpoint, Solsksjaer has essentially a full-strength team at his disposal, with the only long-term absentees being Phil Jones and Anthony Martial. They’ll be looking to rip apart Roma’s backline once again after a clinical attacking display, with Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani both scoring a brace in Manchester.

The Red Devils come in well-rested and are surely in reaching distance of their first final since the 2016/17 campaign, where they beat Ajax to lift the trophy.

Roma vs Manchester United Prediction

It’s very tough to go against a United side who is really playing tremendous football right now. But, I do think Roma will respond with a much better performance after an embarrassing defeat.

At this point, it’s about pride for the Italians. After all, they do play a whole lot better at the Stadio Olimpico, collecting a 15-5-2 record between Serie A and Europa on home turf.

Take the visitors for a slim one-goal victory on Thursday.

Pick: Manchester United to Win by 1 (+300)
