Late October tennis is often derided as “garbage time” in tennis, with the post-US Open tournaments being fertile ground for upsets and unusual results.
But don’t tell that to Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime. Because he’s on a roll.

The 22-year-old Canadian, who has maintained a good ranking but hasn’t had the results at the Grand Slam level that he enjoyed in 2021, has come on strong in these late stages of the season.
He ran through a pair of ATP 250 events the last two weeks – winning titles in Florence, Italy and then in Antwerp, Belgium.
.@felixtennis: two titles and one final indoors in 2022. 🤯 Looks like the end of the season could have Félix Auger-Aliassime written all over it! 🔥👊@Rogers pic.twitter.com/7ebmOeOv0d

With the 28-player draws, he needed to win just four matches to take both titles. He lost just one set in Florence (in his opener vs Oscar Otte) and one in the quarterfinals in Antwerp, where he had to come back from a set down to defeat Brit Daniel Evans.
So far in Basel, he has looked fresh and ready to win a third straight title.
After losing his first nine finals and finally breaking the duck indoors in Rotterdam early this year, he has tripled that total – again, indoors on hard court, his best surface – and is looking for more.
Bublik, Ever the Mercenary
Bublik, Russian-born and Kazakhstan-supported, has never made any secret of the reason he plays tennis.
It’s to make money. And now, with a new baby, it’s to support a family.
He is a mercurial talent – one who can look like a world-beater one day, a disaffected, jaded veteran the next.

Bublik reached his career-high back in February, a few weeks after winning his first and only ATP Tour title indoors on hard court, in Montpellier, France.
It’s definitely a surface and conditions that suit him. He made the final in Metz, France last month under similar conditions.

Auger-Aliassime the Favorite
The head-to-head between these two players is pretty inconclusive.
When Auger-Aliassime was still a teenager, he defeated Bublik on the Asian swing in a first-round match in Shanghai. But Bublik retired before the match came to completion.
Their other meeting came on clay in 2020, during a not-particularly inspired patch of play for the young Canadian.
The great evener in this one is that the indoor hard-court surface is preferred by both. The edge for Auger-Aliassime is just how well he’s playing at the moment.
Bublik hasn’t struck anyone as the kind of guy who is going to get super-motivated to end anyone’s winning streak. Of course, he does have the ability to do it, on paper.
The Canadian Dismantles Kecmanovic
Hopefully, he didn’t watch any of the Canadian’s dismantling of Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round Thursday.
As he has every time the two have played each other indoors, Auger-Aliassime took care of business.
Two absolutely bonkers statistics from Félix Auger-Aliassime's win today:
– He hit more aces than he lost total points on his own serve
– He hit more winners than Kecmanovic won TOTAL POINTS in the ENTIRE matchFAA on another level right now.

This was the worst beatdown of all – 6-1, 6-0 in just 49 minutes. Kecmanovic won just 20 of the 70 points played, and just 12-of-34 on his own serve. It was comprehensive.
In two matches over five sets, Auger-Aliassime has 27 aces and six double faults. And as his serve goes, he usually goes.
Auger-Aliassime vs Bublik Match History
Year | Tournament | Surface | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2020 | Hamburg (R16) | Outdoor Clay | 6-4, 6-2 | Bublik |
2019 | Masters Shanghai (R64) | Outdoor Hard | 7-6 (5), 4-0 retd | Auger-Aliassime |
Bublik hasn’t dropped a set in wins over lucky loser Aslan Karatsev and Spaniard Albert Ramos-Viñolas.
Auger-Aliassime vs Bublik Pick
There is always a chance of a hiccup with Auger-Aliassime – a poor set, or a poor tiebreak.
But that hasn’t been happening much on this run.
He should be all over Bublik.
