Rune Wins a Thriller

It took nearly four hours, and a bit of controversy, but the 20-year tennis star defeated his round of 16 opponent Francisco Cerundolo 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, to earn a spot in the final eight at the French Open.

The match had everything.

In a match that went back-and-forth, and back-and-forth, it was truly a nail-biter from the first serve. Rune had the opportunity to serve out the match earlier in that deciding set, but couldn’t. This led to a tiebreak, that Rune was eventually able to win.

The 20-year old’s serve proved to be a bit of an issue again, with 10 double faults. He’s got a lot of raw talent, and plays well, but he’ll have to tighten up his game a bit if he wants to continue on.

Ruud Continues to Dominate on Clay

The 24-year old has found a surface that he likes to play on. With his round of 16 win against Nicolas Jarry, the Norwegian collected his tour-leading 85th win on clay since 2020.

Ruud is no stranger to the second week at the French Open. Last year he reached the final match, where he ultimately lost to the King of clay, Rafael Nadal. But with Nadal out this year, can Ruud take it home?

He’s had a pretty strong tournament so far, and enters the quarterfinal coming off a strong straight set win over Jarry. The two had faced each other less than two weeks ago, where Jarry actually won in straight sets. But this time around Ruud didn’t give Jarry any opportunity to gain momentum.

Jarry did managed 56 winners to Ruud’s 30, but the 24-year old was the more consistent player from start to finish, saving 14 of 17 breaks in the meantime.

A 2022 Repeat

These two have faced each other a handful of times, including the quarterfinals of the 2022 French Open. Ruud currently holds the head-to-head edge with a 4-1 record against Rune, but it is Rune that won their most recent match in the semifinals of the Italian Open.

This is a close one that could go either way. But when you get to the second week of a tournament, fatigue is something that can start playing a part in the match.

Rune is coming off a five-set battle of a match, while Ruud is going into the quarterfinals after a relatively straightforward straight set win. Prior to that match, the two had played a comparable amount of tennis over the course of the tournament.

For me, Ruud has the slight upper hand. He’s more experienced, and that loss that came just 11 days ago against Rune might give him that edge he needs to get this win.
