Swiatek Reaches Maiden Australian Open Quarterfinal

Despite not being one of the favorites to win outright entering the tournament, she has always been the favorite to win the fourth quarter.

But for the first time all tournament, Swiatek saw one of her matches go the distance. The Pole dropped the first set against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, but managed to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, to achieve her career-best showing at the Aussie Open.

The 20-year old recorded 29 winners to Cirstea’s 27, and ultimately the Romanian recorded more unforced errors as well. Cirstea managed to win 76 percent of Swiatek’s second serve points, which allowed her to stay in the match. But Swiatek saving eight of 12 break points and converting six of 14 chances was something Cirstea couldn’t compete with.

Heading into this quarterfinal Swiatek holds a 29-2 record against opponents outside the Top 30 when playing against them in a Grand Slam. With Kanepi ranked 115 at the moment, this is definitely a relevant record.

Kanepi Upsets Sabalenka

The Estonian has had herself a pretty impressive tournament so far. She started her week off by upsetting 15th Angelique Kerber in straight sets, and more recently found herself piecing together a comeback to defeat World No. 2 and second seed Aryna Sabalenka 5-7, 6-2, 7(10)-6(7).

Sabalenka has not had a good year so far, and it continued into her fourth round match against Kanepi, where she put up 15 double faults. A pretty unusual number for the Belarusian player. Regardless, Kanepi was able to outplay her opponent and earn a spot in the final eight. The Estonian recorded 30 winners to 30 unforced errors, in comparison to Sablenka 36 winners and 46 double faults.

With her win, the 36-year old became the 15th active player to reach the quarterfinals at every Grand Slam. But she’s now looking ahead to the semi’s with only Swiatek standing in her way.

Swiatek vs Kanepi Best Bet

It’s likely that this match will be tight. Both players are have strong powerful groundstrokes and are heavy hitters.

The biggest difference has been the serve. Swiatek’s serve has been more reliable and consistent so far in the tournament than her opponent’s has.

Over the course of four matches, Kanepi has yet to land more than 58 percent of her first serves, with it averaging around 50 percent. Whereas Swiatek has shown more consistency, usually landing about 65 percent of her first serves. With both players bringing the athleticism and power, this consistency could be the edge that is needed to move on.

Of all the players left in the tournament, many are saying that Swiatek is the one that can challenge Barty for the title. The matches will continue to get tougher, and she might drop a set, but Swiatek looks to be the one most likely to come out of this one.

But that’s not where the best bet is. Both players definitely do have the ability to win this match, but regardless of the winner, expect this match to go the distance, resulting in both players winning at least one set.
