Djokovic Continues to be Perfect

With his quarterfinal win over Hubert Hurkacz, the Serb is 15-0 on the 2023 season, which is his fourth best winning streak to start a season. He went onto defeat Hurkacz 6-3, 7-5.

Djokovic was fairly dominate out the gate. He didn’t face a single break point and managed to covert two of eight on route to the win. The 35-year old once again had a very impressive serve going. He recorded a 81 percent winning percentage when landing his first serve, and followed it up with a staggering 88 win percentage when landing his second. Despite Hurkacz’s seven aces, he didn’t come close to touching Djokovic’s serve.

This level of play is also coming after taking a bit of a break. Djokovic entered this tournament, having not competed since winning the Australian Open at the end of January. The month rest has clearly proven to have been beneficial.

21 Points in a Row

To earn his spot in the semifinals, Medvedev went on a 21-0 run against Borna Coric to win 6-3, 6-2. With the win, he extends his winning streak to 12, and has yet to drop a set this week.

The Russian has been perfect this week, barely breaking a sweat to take down each one of his opponents. Djokovic will of course be his toughest opponent to date.

The 27-year old is coming in hot, as he’s already collected two trophies this year alone. But is it enough to take that Djokovic in his current form?

Second Meeting of 2023

This will not only be the second meeting of 2023 already between these two, but the 14th overall career meeting. Djokovic and Medvedev first saw each other on the court in 2017, and apart from 2018, have played each other a handful of times each year since.

Djokovic has a strong 9-4 head-to-head record against Medvedev, and hasn’t allowed the Russian to win a match against him since the 2021 US Open. A memorable match, as it was the finals.

Djokovic vs Medvedev Prediction

In his post-game interview, Medvedev said “when you play Novak, Novak is always the favorite.” And that’s true once again.  But is it Medvedev’s time to win again? He has shown he can do it, having won four times against the Serb.

Neither player presents a weakness at this time. The two of them are two of the best players on tour, and actually play a similar game at times. Both like to dominate the baseline and enjoy a hardcourt.

It’s possible that this match will be more intense than whatever the final match will be. Regardless of the winner here, it’s going to be a match worth watching, and it’ll most likely go the distance.
