James Duckworth vs Christopher O’Connell Prediction

We’re highlighting this match today, because it should be interesting between the two Australians. Despite being from the same country, and only two years apart, the two haven’t played each other outside a qualifying match in 2015. Not that it really matters this many years later, but Duckworth did win in straight sets.

The two are set to take the court later today at 12:15 pm ET, on Court 9.

Both players most recently played in the Winston-Salem Open last week, where Duckworth made it to the Round of 32, while O’Connell was defeated in the Round of 64.

Neither player has been able to find tremendous success at the US Open in the past. Both of their best showings have been the second round.

Duckworth might be coming in a little hotter than his opponent, so look for him to take the match.

Best Bet: James Duckworth (+140)

Denis Shapovalov vs Marc-Andrea Huesler Prediction

This will be an interesting opening match between Shapovalov and Huesler. The two lefties have never played each other before, and despite Shapovalov coming in as the favorite, don’t write the 26-year old Swiss off.

Shapovalov has been a name that’s always hanging around. He has some big wins in his career, and has faced the best on some of the biggest stages. But one of his biggest issues has been his consistency. If this match was happening six-seven months ago, it’d be a no-brainer, but because of how Shapovalov’s season has played out, any competitor could take a match from him, or at least a set or two.

Huesler may be coming into this match feeling confident. He’s making his US Open main draw debut, which is exciting, but he’s also coming off a semifinal run at the Winston-Salem Open last week.

What gives Shapovalov the edge here is his previous experience at the tournament. He’s had a deep run before, and despite maybe not being able to do that this year, he should be able to get through this first round. Heading into the tournament, his US Open odds to win were listed at +8000.

If the Canadian is able to stay focused, and not too in his head, he should be able to move on. But it won’t come as easy as a straight set win. Look for Huesler to take at least one set.

Best Bet: Denis Shapovalov to win 3-1 (+280)

Fabio Fognini vs Aslan Karatsev Prediction

This first round match is the first meeting between these two players as well. 35-year old Fognini will take on 28-year old Karatsev in an exciting opening round match. The two are scheduled to play later this afternoon at 3:30 pm ET on Court 13.

Neither player is having a phenomenal year. Heading into the tournament Fognini has a 16-18 record, while Karatsev has a 15-21. But coming into this match Karatsev is the slight favorite to win at -130. Fognini is listed at +110.

As the slightly older player here, with a bit more experience and success over the years, look for Fognini to use that to his advantage and move onto the second round.

Best Bet: Fabio Fognini (+110)
