  • Indiana was routed 92-71 at Connecticut in its season opener

The Caitlin Clark era didn’t exactly start with a bang for the Indiana Fever (0-1, 0-0 home, 0-1 ATS). Indiana fell behind early against Connecticut and never recovered during a lopsided 92-71 setback as seven-point road underdogs.

The road doesn’t ease up any on Thursday when Indiana hosts the New York Liberty (1-0, 1-0 away, 0-1 ATS) at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis (7:00 pm ET). Last year’s WNBA title runners-up are already 1-0 away this season and are listed as big road favorites in the Fever vs Liberty odds for Thursday night’s game.

Team Spread Moneyline Total
New York Liberty -8.5 (-112) -345 O  169 (-110)
Indiana Fever +8.5 (-108) +275 U 169  (-110)

The Liberty come to Indianapolis as 8.5-point ATS favorites and -345 chalk on the moneyline. Indiana is a +275 home underdog. The game total is sitting at 169, the exact same as Indiana’s first game against the Sun, which finished with 163 combined points.

Clark’s WNBA Debut Started Slow

Caitlin Clark’s first game as a pro looked early on like it might be a disaster. The NCAA’s all-time leading scorer had zero points in the first quarter as her Fever fell behind 19-13. But she would find her footing, at least somewhat, as the game went on, finishing with a team-high 20 points on an inefficient 33.3% shooting from the field (5-of-15). She added three assists and two steals, but committed a horrendous 10 turnovers.

The 2023 #1 overall pick Aliyah Boston was nearly invisible on offense. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year, who averaged 14.5 PPG and 8.4 RPG in her first season as a pro, had just four points on 2-of-6 shooting from the floor.

New York’s first game of the season ended with a W, but head coach Sandy Brondello clearly wasn’t thrilled. As 11.5-point road favorites at Washington, the Liberty needed to comeback from eight points down at the end of three quarters, eking out an 85-80 victory.

Jonquel Jones had a game-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting along with eight rebounds, while fellow forward Betnijah Laney-Hamilton added 20 points. Sabrina Ionescu, the 2020 #1 pick, had 15 points and a game-high eight assists.

New York went a perfect 4-0 against Indiana last season, winning by an average margin of 13.5 points per game. The smallest margin of victory  was eight points, though that was in a game that went to OT at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The player props for Thursday’s game list Breanna Stewart with a game-high point total of 21.5 O/U. Stewart finished second in the league in scoring last year at 23.0 PPG but had just eight points on 3-of-9 shooting in the first game of the 2024 season against Washington.

Clark’s point total is sitting at 20.5, one point lower than her total in the season opener. Her rebound total has dropped from 4.5 to 3.5 after she finished with zero boards on Tuesday.

New York Liberty vs Indiana Fever Predictions

This is a tough matchup for the young Fever in just their second game of the season. The Liberty are absolutely stacked and were the only team to take a game from the even-more-stacked Las Vegas Aces in last year’s WNBA playoffs.

But New York was not sharp in its first game of the season, especially their leader, Stewart.  If the two-time MVP is still working her way into game shape, the Fever have a chance to keep this close on their home court, which should have a phenomenal atmosphere in Clark’s first-ever home game.

Liberty vs Fever picks:

  • Fever +8.5 (-110)
  • Stewart under 21.5 points
