No futures market swings like the Stanley Cup. The NHL puts 16 teams into a four-round grinder where seven-game series can flip the board overnight, hot goalies can carry double-digit underdogs, and the Presidents’ Trophy is basically a curse. The result is a futures landscape that looks completely different in October, January, and April — and a champion that’s almost never the team you’d have bet on at opening night.

This page is the receipt. Every NHL season going back to 2017-18 is below, with the chart showing how the market moved, a quick recap of how the champion got there, and dated bullet notes on what actually pushed the lines.

Florida repeated. The Panthers took down Edmonton in six in a Cup Final rematch, becoming the first back-to-back winner since Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021. Sam Reinhart hung four goals on the Oilers in the Game 6 clincher, and Sam Bennett walked off with the Conn Smythe.

This was the first Cup Finals rematch since Detroit-Pittsburgh in 2008 and 2009, and Edmonton actually opened the series as -120 favorites thanks to home ice. The Cats didn’t care. They became the first back-to-back winner in the salary cap era and the second franchise this decade to do it.

Edmonton owned the top of the board for most of the 2024-25 season, with Florida rarely sitting in the favorite’s chair until the playoffs were already underway. Carolina, Dallas, and Winnipeg all took turns crashing the top of the leaderboard before getting knocked off.

Key moments that shifted the 2025 Stanley Cup futures market:

  • [June 17] Florida clinched the repeat with a 5-1 Game 6 victory at home. Reinhart’s four-goal performance sealed it for the Cats.
  • [May 30] The Finals were set for a rematch. Edmonton entered as -120 favorites with home ice, while Florida sat at +100.
  • [May 13] Dallas surged to +275 Cup favorites after taking a 3-1 series lead over Winnipeg. Rantanen led all playoff scorers at that point.
  • [May 1] Carolina jumped to the top at +486 after closing out New Jersey in five games to become the first team to reach Round 2.
  • [April 18] Winnipeg’s historic 116-point season didn’t translate to betting respect. The Jets stayed at +2500 despite winning the Presidents’ Trophy.
  • [April 15] Florida overtook Dallas as Cup favorites at +650 just before the playoffs began. The Stars drew a tough first-round matchup with Colorado.
  • [March 7] Trade deadline chaos. Dallas landed Mikko Rantanen from Carolina with an eight-year extension attached. Florida added Brad Marchand. Both teams saw their odds shorten.
  • [February 15] Edmonton (+600) held steady as favorites. McDavid and Draisaitl kept tearing up the league, with the Oilers’ odds bouncing between +550 and +700.
  • [February 1] Carolina’s odds shortened from +1100 to +650 after landing Rantanen, briefly making the Canes Edmonton’s biggest threat on the board.
  • [January 15] Edmonton (+650) created separation from the pack after going 26-8-2 since November 8th. Cup odds moved from +1000 to +650 during the hot streak.
  • [December 15] Vancouver imploded after trading J.T. Miller to the Rangers. Their odds cratered from +2800 to +6000.
  • [November 15] New Jersey (+1300) dropped 10 of 14 games. Washington (+1200) rose behind a league-best defense.
  • [October 24] Winnipeg started 14-1, the best opening stretch in NHL history. Despite the hot start, their Cup odds stayed stuck at +2500.
  • [October 15] Edmonton (+800) opened as preseason favorites. Florida checked in at +1000, with Dallas right behind at +1100.
  • [June 13] The Florida Panthers opened as +900 favorites to repeat as champions in 2025. Fresh off their Game 7 victory over Edmonton, the Panthers looked to go back-to-back, and that’s exactly what they did.

The Cats finally got one. Florida’s first Stanley Cup in franchise history came down to a Game 7 against Edmonton, and they very nearly handed it back. After racing out to a 3-0 series lead, the Panthers watched the Oilers force a winner-take-all on home ice before Sergei Bobrovsky and the Cats’ forward depth pulled it out.

The Panthers closed as slight underdogs, which says everything about how the futures market viewed the matchup — Edmonton’s McDavid-Draisaitl tandem had bullied the Western Conference and was the popular pick to lift the Cup. The opening odds for 2023-24 had Colorado out front with Toronto and Edmonton chasing.

Dallas briefly emerged as the favorite during their second-round series against Colorado, only to bow out to the Oilers in the Conference Final. Below is how the market told the story month by month:

  • [May 15] The Dallas Stars became the new Cup favorites after taking a 3-1 series lead over the Colorado Avalanche in Round 2.
  • [December 1] The Avalanche started pulling away from the pack with updated odds of +767, while the Bruins and Rangers both surged into the top five.
  • [November 1] The reigning Cup champs, the Vegas Golden Knights, were back to being a top-five favorite (+1067) after opening the regular season as longshots.
  • [October 2] The Lightning got hit with bad news ahead of the new season, as goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy was set to miss the first two months of the regular season following a surgical procedure. The Bolts’ Cup odds lengthened from +1700 to +1900 as a result.
  • [August 1] The Bruins’ Stanley Cup odds faded to +1480 following news that Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci were retiring. The B’s had initially opened as a top-five favorite to win the Cup.
  • [July 3] The Hurricanes were big players in NHL Free Agency, signing Dmitry Orlov and Michael Bunting. Carolina became the second-favorite to win the Cup at FanDuel and DraftKings, though other books such as BetMGM still had them as +1200 longshots.
  • [June 13] The Colorado Avalanche opened as +800 betting favorites to win the Stanley Cup in 2024. Two Canadian teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs (+1000) and Edmonton Oilers (+1050), rounded out the top three favorites.

Sixth season, first ring. Vegas made quick work of the Florida Panthers in a five-game Final to capture the Cup — one of the fastest title runs for an expansion franchise in modern major-pro-sports history. Jonathan Marchessault took home the Conn Smythe.

2023 Closing Stanley Cup Odds

Vegas Golden Knights -1500
Florida Panthers +900

Odds as of June 13, 2023, at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Colorado opened as the favorite to repeat and immediately got bounced in Round 1. Boston spent most of the regular season at the top of the board after racking up a record-shattering 65-12-5 mark, only to also lose in Round 1, this time to Florida in seven games. Toronto, Carolina, and Dallas all cycled through favorite status during the playoffs before Vegas took over and finished the job.

The biggest odds movers of the 2023 Stanley Cup season:

  • [June 13] Ahead of Tuesday’s Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Golden Knights were priced as massive -1500 favorites over the Florida Panthers. Vegas closed out the series in five.
  • [May 29] The 2023 Stanley Cup Final matchup was finalized, with Vegas playing Florida in the best-of-seven series. The opening Final odds priced the Knights as -130 favorites over the Panthers, around a 56.5% implied probability.
  • [May 27] Vegas became the Cup favorite despite Florida being the first team to advance to the Final. The odds implied Vegas would be favored once they closed out their Western Conference Final series with Dallas.
  • [May 13] The Carolina Hurricanes emerged as the new Stanley Cup favorites at +210 after dismantling the New Jersey Devils in Round 2. Carolina’s Eastern Conference Final opponent, the Florida Panthers, were the second betting choice at +350.
  • [May 1] The Stanley Cup odds saw a major shakeup following a shocking Sunday of playoff hockey. The Maple Leafs became the favorites at +350 with Boston and Colorado both getting eliminated in Round 1.
  • [April 14] The Oilers (+800) surged into the top three following a nine-game winning streak to close the regular season, and the fact that they were facing the LA Kings in Round 1 didn’t hurt either.
  • [April 1] The Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup odds lengthened from +700 to +925 following news that Andrei Svechnikov would miss the remainder of the regular season and playoffs with a shoulder injury. Boston’s Cup odds, meanwhile, improved from +410 to +380.
  • [March 3] The Rangers acquired Patrick Kane from Chicago, shortening NYR’s Cup odds from +1400 to +1100. New Jersey landed Timo Meier, improving the Devils’ Cup odds from +1400 to +1200.
  • [January 2] The Bruins (+600) overtook the Avalanche (+700) as the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Entering the new year, Boston owned the NHL’s best record at 28-4-4, good for 60 points.
  • [December 5] Boston continued to see its Stanley Cup odds shorten into December. The Bruins closed in on the Avalanche with average Cup odds of +575, with Colorado still favored at +475.
  • [November 5] Boston was the best NHL team through the first 10 games, posting a 9-1 record. The Bruins’ average Cup odds shortened to +900, making them a top-three favorite.
  • [October 18] Calgary was a notable early-season mover. The Flames’ average Cup odds shortened to +1000 amidst a 3-0 start to the season.
  • [August 19] The Golden Knights continued to see their Cup odds worsen, fading from +1000 to +1700 during the NHL offseason. The market would have wished it back come June.
  • [July 18] Carolina jumped to the second-best Stanley Cup odds alongside Toronto after acquiring Brent Burns and Max Pacioretty during free agency. Columbus signed Johnny Gaudreau, which improved their Cup odds from +10000 to +7500.
  • [June 27] Immediately after winning their first Stanley Cup since 2001, Colorado opened as +500 favorites to repeat as NHL champions in 2023. The Maple Leafs had the second-best Stanley Cup odds at +900, while the Lightning opened at +1000.

2022 Stanley Cup Odds

Twenty-one years between Cups, and Colorado made damn sure it was worth the wait. The Avs ran through the Western Conference, then ended Tampa Bay’s three-peat bid in six games to capture their third championship in franchise history. Cale Makar won the Conn Smythe in a tournament where he looked like the best player on the ice every night.

Colorado dominated the odds board from New Year’s onward and entered the Final as substantial -195 favorites over the Bolts. This was a chalk year — the betting favorite delivered, which doesn’t happen often in this sport.

  • [February 21] The Colorado Avalanche’s odds continued to improve even though they were the standalone favorite. At certain online sportsbooks, the Avalanche were as low as +400.

2021 Stanley Cup Odds

Lightning struck twice. The Bolts dispatched a Cinderella Montreal Canadiens squad in five games to capture back-to-back Cups during a season that started in January thanks to the lingering effects of the pandemic. Andrei Vasilevskiy was an absolute wall, posting four shutouts in the playoffs and winning the Conn Smythe.

By the end of the series, the futures market had Tampa at -2000 to finish it off. Spoiler: they did.

2020 Stanley Cup Odds

Bubble hockey, baby. The 2019-20 season got chopped in half by COVID, sent every playoff team to Toronto and Edmonton hub cities for two months, and somehow produced one of the more compelling Cup runs in recent memory. Tampa Bay finally got over the playoff hump, beating Dallas 4-2 to capture the franchise’s second championship. Victor Hedman won the Conn Smythe.

The Bolts were among the favorites all year. Dallas? Not so much. The Stars were nobody’s pick coming out of the pause and ran the West behind Anton Khudobin’s career run in net.

2020 Closing Stanley Cup Odds

Team Stanley Cup Odds
Tampa Bay Lightning -560
Dallas Stars +450

Odds as of September 27, 2020.

Odds movement notes from the wildest NHL season in modern history:

  • [September 27] The Stars trimmed Tampa’s lead to 3-2 with a double-overtime victory in Game 5. The Lightning dropped from -3335 to -560, while Dallas improved from +1500 to +450.
  • [September 26] A 5-4 OT win in Game 4 gave Tampa a 3-1 series lead and shortened their odds to -3335. Dallas was a +1500 longshot to pull off an improbable comeback.
  • [September 24] Up 2-1 after Game 3, Tampa Bay was an incredibly short -520 to win the 2020 Cup. Dallas’ odds faded to +411.
  • [September 22] A Game 2 win to even the series made the Bolts’ odds (-195) even shorter than when the series started.
  • [September 19] Dallas’ Game 1 victory sent their odds from +160 to -114, while Tampa faded from -180 to -106.
  • [September 17] Tampa opened at -180 against the Stars (+160) to open the Stanley Cup Final.
  • [September 13] Up 3-1 on the Golden Knights (+575), the Dallas Stars (+198) finally had better odds than Vegas to win the Cup.
  • [September 8] TB’s 8-2 beatdown of NYI in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final moved the Lightning into the driver’s seat at +100.
  • [September 4] The Flyers (+900) and Canucks (+1600) were at +3500 and +125000, respectively, 72 hours earlier. Both clawed back from 3-1 series deficits to force Game 7s against the Islanders and Golden Knights.
  • [August 17] Holding a 3-1 lead on Chicago, Vegas (+325) became the Stanley Cup favorite, narrowly ahead of Colorado (+350).
  • [August 10] The Flyers and Golden Knights were listed as co-favorites at +550 heading into the first round of the playoffs.
  • [August 5] Tampa Bay (+500) had the inside track on the #1 seed in the East and was alone at the top of the odds.
  • [May 11] The second-tier favorites generally got longer with the MLB planning a shortened, expanded-playoff format. Fewer games meant greater likelihood for unexpected outcomes.
  • [March 18] With ample time to mull it over, bettors and sportsbooks evidently believed the Flyers were legit Cup contenders. The hottest team in the league at the time of the COVID pause became a top-five favorite at +900.
  • [March 13] Some sportsbooks left their NHL futures up during the coronavirus hiatus. Consensus was that the pause helped the league-leading Bruins (+500), who had more time to recover after a deep playoff run the previous season.
  • [February 25] After the trade deadline, the odds didn’t shift much. Tampa’s additions of Blake Coleman and Zach Bogosian consolidated their status as favorites at +550.
  • [December 27] The Capitals were the sole favorite at +750, sitting three points clear of the league with 57 points in 38 games.
  • [November 26] The Islanders leapt all the way to third in the futures odds (+1000) thanks to a 17-game point streak.
  • [October 29] Colorado moved to the top of the odds, tied with the Maple Leafs at +700. Tampa (+800), Boston (+850) and Vegas (+850) rounded out the top five.
  • [June 13] The Tampa Bay Lightning opened as the favorites to win the 2020 Stanley Cup. The Vegas Golden Knights had the best odds among Western Conference teams.

2019 Stanley Cup Odds

From last place to a Stanley Cup. The St. Louis Blues were dead last in the NHL on January 3, 2019, and then proceeded to flip a switch behind rookie goalie Jordan Binnington, win the franchise’s first championship, and beat Boston in a Game 7 on the road. Ryan O’Reilly took home the Conn Smythe.

The futures market never bought it. The Blues were underdogs in basically every series they played, and even in the closing odds for the Final, Boston was a sizable -178 favorite. Bettors who took the +160 on St. Louis cashed one of the better futures tickets of the era.

2019 Closing Stanley Cup Odds

Team Stanley Cup Odds
Boston Bruins -178
St. Louis Blues +160

The first round was an absolute bloodbath. Tampa Bay — the Presidents’ Trophy winner — got swept by Columbus. The other three division winners (Calgary, Nashville, Washington) also went home in Round 1. Boston was the team left standing as the futures market’s favorite, and they came an OT goal or two away from making good on it.

The shifts that defined the 2019 Stanley Cup futures market:

  • [June 10] The Bruins forced a Game 7 and were listed as -145 favorites to hoist the Cup.
  • [June 7] The Blues picked up a win on the road in Game 5, taking a 3-2 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final. They were heavily favored to close it out at -290 odds.
  • [June 4] The Blues evened the series 2-2, and their odds went back to +140, which is roughly where they were to start the Final.
  • [June 2] After a commanding 7-2 victory in Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead, the Bruins were heavy -340 favorites.
  • [May 30] The Blues stole Game 2 on the road in OT and saw their average odds go from +250 to +110 as a result.
  • [May 28] After winning Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Bruins’ average odds moved from -160 to -300.
  • [May 22] The Boston Bruins opened as favorites over the St. Louis Blues in the 2019 Stanley Cup Final.
  • [May 17] After sweeping the Hurricanes, the Bruins saw their average Stanley Cup odds shorten to -150, making them the odds-on favorite.
  • [May 9] The Bruins still had the best odds to win the Cup with the Conference Finals set, while the Sharks, after defeating the Avalanche in Game 7, had the second-best odds.
  • [May 3] The Carolina Hurricanes became the favorites to win the Cup after taking a 3-0 series lead on the Islanders.
  • [April 25] After all four division-winners fell in the first round of the NHL Playoffs, the Boston Bruins were left as the favorites entering Round 2.
  • [April 15] With the Lightning down 3-0 in their first-round series to the Blue Jackets, the Washington Capitals became Stanley Cup favorites.
  • [April 1] At +220 on average, Tampa Bay’s odds were the shortest they had been all year, just in time for them to get swept in Round 1.
  • [February 26] After a four-month hiatus, the Bruins were once again a top-five Cup contender.

2018 Stanley Cup Odds

Ovi got his Cup. After 13 seasons of “but can he win the big one?”, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals finally broke through, downing the expansion Vegas Golden Knights in five games to capture the franchise’s first championship. It only took 44 years.

The expansion Knights are the bigger story from a futures market perspective. Vegas was a 500/1 longshot at multiple sportsbooks when the season opened and made the Stanley Cup Final. Some bettors who got down on that ticket retired with the proceeds. Oddsmakers also wised up to Boston midseason and shortened them aggressively once they realized that team was for real. And Tampa Bay’s odds came roaring back after missing the playoffs entirely the year before. The other notable streak: no team from California (Kings, Sharks, Ducks) made a serious title run for the first time since 2009.
