Two of the game’s premier strikers will square off in the World Cup quarterfinals when Erling Haaland’s Norwegian side meets Harry Kane and England on Saturday, July 11, in Miami, FL.

Haaland scored two absolute bangers in Sunday’s win over Brazil, continuing a wildly impressive run for Norway, but England has opened as a modest favorite to advance after taking down Mexico in the most-hostile of territory (Mexico City).

Haaland Heads Norway Into Quarters

After 79 minutes of missed chances and stunning saves, Haaland finally broke the deadlock in Sunday’s Brazil/Norway match, heading home a picture-perfect cross from second-half sub Andreas Schjelderup.

The Man City striker would stretch Norway’s lead to 2-0 on a clinical strike into the bottom-right corner in the 90th minute. Neymar converted a late penalty for Brazil, soiling an otherwise career-best performance from keeper Orjan Nyland.

Currently without a club team, the former Sevilla keeper stopped a Bruno Guimaraes penalty in the 14th minute, and made arguably the save of the tournament in the on a would-be own goal.

Norway’s group-stage campaign included a 4-1 win over Iraq, a 3-2 win over Senegal, and 4-1 loss to France (in which most of their key players were resting). They started the knockout stage with a thrilling 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.

Haaland is tied for the lead in the Golden Boot race with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe with seven goals.

Bellingham Brace Enough for England

After a methodical and largely uneventful first half-hour against Mexico on Sunday night, a lightning quick England counterattack ended in a Jude Bellingham header. That marker would set off a lightning storm of goals.

Just two minutes after he opened the scoring, Bellingham capped off another England break, setting the record for fastest two goals in English World Cup history in the process (1 minute 38 seconds).

Mexico had not surrendered a goal in the first four matches of the tournament.

Julian Quinones would make the score 3-1 just four minutes after Bellingham extended England’s lead.

Despite Jarell Quansah getting sent off early in the second half, the Three Lions earned a penalty in the 60th minute which Harry Kane calmly converted. That goal proved massive as Mexico would get back within one on their own penalty in the 69th minute, the final goal in a torrid match.

England’s regulation-time win ended Mexico’s run of 26 straight without a loss at Estadio Azteca.

England and Norway have met 12 times previously. England holds a 7-3-2 edge. None of those games have come in the last decade, though, and only were in this century: a 1-0 friendly win in Norway in 2012, and another 1-0 friendly win in England in 2014. Haaland was 14 years old the last time his country met England.
