The long national nightmare is finally over – the Masters has returned and there’s electricity in the air with so many golfers in great form in the lead-up to the event.

Rory McIlroy has been playing lights-out and enters as the favorite, looking to slip into a green jacket to become just the sixth man to complete the career grand slam. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods is in search of a fifth Masters title and his first since 2005.

Rory McIlroy Poised to Complete Career Grand Slam

Following his impressive victory at the Players Championship last month, pretty much the only win Rory McIlroy needs in his career is that ever elusive green jacket.

It’s not as if Rory hasn’t played very well around Augusta National. Ever since his final round blowup in the 2011 Masters where he shot 80, questions have persisted about whether he could get it done.

The Ulsterman comes in with extremely good form, the best consistent stretch of golf in his career. Normally those low of odds (+700) would get a caution from me, but there’s no intelligent argument that Rory will not win the Masters on Sunday.

McIlroy is prone to starting slowly at the Masters, however. Last year’s 3-under 69 was his best opening round since 2011 at Augusta, so perhaps if you wait to wager on him after the first round, there may be some value in betting on him.

Will Tiger Woods Win His First Green Jacket Since 2005?

Love him or hate him, we all want Tiger Woods to be in contention on the second nine Sunday. Is there even reason to believe he’ll be in the hunt by then? This year’s results don’t exactly point to him being completely sharp.

What’s most concerning is that he’s 74th in strokes gained: putting. While I’d love for him to win, his +1400 odds realistically should be at least doubled, but they’re that low based on name value alone. Make the tough call and pass on Tiger.

Don’t Sleep on Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth is enduring his longest prolonged slump of his career, without tasting a victory since the 2017 Open Championship. He’s shown signs of life through two rounds at the Valero Texas Open, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and Genesis Open before wretched weekends have seen him tumbling down the leaderboard.

He seems to be pleased with his progress and something about Augusta National brings out the absolute best in Spieth. His +2000 odds are actually quite appealing given that he plays so well here and has shown signs of breaking out of his funk.

First Time Major Winners Common at the Masters

The last four Masters winners and seven of the past eight champs all made the Masters their maiden major title (Bubba Watson in 2014 was the exception). Keep that in mind when placing wagers this weekend.

A guy like Matt Kuchar (+4500) fits the bill. He’s been playing fantastically, and made it all the way to the final of the WGC-Dell Match Play two weeks ago, and he boasts three career top-5 finishes at the Masters.

2019 Masters Best Value Picks

  1. Jason Day (+2800): Way back in November I picked Day for the Masters so why change now? Has a second and third place showing at Masters, and has six top-13 finishes this season.
  2. Adam Scott (+4000): 2013 Masters champ contended in the latest major at the PGA last year (third place). Has had two very strong chances to win this season and has putted much better with the flagstick in (14th in strokes gained: putting.)
  3. Kevin Kisner (+6600): Won his last tournament, the WGC-Dell Match Play in dominating fashion. Getting stronger in majors, finishing runner-up at Open Championship last year and 54-hole leader at 2017 PGA.
  4. Si Woo Kim (+10000): Boom or bust potential. Won 2017 Players Championship and led last week’s Valero Texas Open after 54 holes resulting in his third top-4 finish this year.
