  • Tyson Fury will make his Las Vegas debut against Tom Schwarz on Saturday, June 15th
  • Fury is widely favored despite the recent Anthony Joshua upset
  •  Schwarz is undefeated in 24 fights but has no names of significance on his list of victims

Tyson Fury will again stake his claim to be the world’s leading heavyweight when he takes on Tom Schwarz in Las Vegas on Saturday, June 15th.

Despite the recent shocking defeat of former world champion Anthony Joshua by Andy Ruiz Jr., the oddsmakers do not expect another upset with Fury rated at a hugely one-sided -2999 to win.

The little-known Schwarz is seen as a huge +1499 underdog. It makes the best value bet the +120 offered for Schwarz to last more than nine-and-a-half rounds.

Fighter Odds Total Rounds
Tyson Fury -2999 U 9.5 -140
Tom Schwarz +1499 O 9.5 +120

*Odds taken 06/10/19

The heavyweight division was turned upside down when the previously unbeaten Joshua was stopped in the seventh round in New York by Ruiz Jr. – who claimed the WBA, IBF, and WBO title belts.

Fury has said he will retire if he is beaten this weekend because it would show that he is a “shot fighter”.

Fury, who styles himself as the Gypsy King, has mocked his fellow Briton over the defeat. And he insists that following his draw with undefeated WBC champion Deontay Wilder last December, he is the major attraction in the heavyweight business

However, a collision with Schwarz will not do much to instantly add luster to that claim. Indeed, Fury has said he will retire if he is beaten this weekend because it would show that he is a “shot fighter”.

This fight is part of a marketing plan to introduce the flamboyant Fury to Las Vegas and to build him up towards becoming a household name in the US on behalf of  the broadcaster ESPN.

The 25-year-old German Schwarz is undefeated in 24 fights but has no names of any significance on his list of victims.

Schwarz Has Only Fought Twice Outside of Germany

Schwarz has never fought in the US and only twice outside of Germany in the neighboring Czech Republic.

Fury – the 30-year-old former WBA and IBF champion –  has signed a five-fight deal with the ESPN network under which he will meet WBC champion Wilder again early next year and possibly twice more.

So this is not designed to be a major test. Even though Ruiz was a wide 25-1 underdog before his victory against Joshua, he still offered more of a challenge even at those odds than Schwarz is likely to pose against Fury.

Schwarz does not possess anything like the speed with which Ruiz troubled Joshua. Neither has he fought for a world title previously, as Ruiz had done.

Instead, Schwarz is seen as rather ponderous and robotic kind of fighter, although he does have decent punching power.

27 Wins 24

Fury is 6’9″ and is a fleet-footed and skillful defensive boxer whose ring craft and ability to move will give him huge advantages over the German. It will also make him look impressive to the viewers of his new broadcast home ESPN.

Fury is sure to turn the event into an entertaining show, however. He is brash and outspoken and is made to embrace the bright lights and carnival atmosphere of Las Vegas.

Fury Has Made a Remarkable Comeback From Booze and Drugs

Fury has staged a remarkable comeback since being forced to vacate the WBA and IBF world titles in 2016 following a series of well-publicized problems with drugs and depression.

That came after the high-point of his career which was his sensational points defeat of the long-serving champion, Wladimir Klitschko, in Dusseldorf, Germany in 2015.

After vacating the titles, his weight ballooned and he confessed to using cocaine and abusing alcohol to excess.

After recovering his fitness, he had two untesting comeback fights last year before challenging Wilder in Los Angeles.

Fury survived two stunning knockdowns before the result was declared a split decision draw. It took his record to 27 wins and one draw.

Schwarz’s most recent contest was a second-on-the-bill win at a hotel in Magdeburg, Germany in March, where he scored a second round knockout of little-known Croatian boxer Kristijan  Krstacic.
