The culmination of the PGA Tour season for the FedEx Cup and the $15 million dollar prize begins Thursday at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club just outside downtown Atlanta.

This is the first year of the new FedEx Cup finale format which sees Justin Thomas starting the tournament in the lead by two strokes over Patrick Cantlay, with every golfer’s score staggered based on where they’re ranked.

Thomas blitzed last week’s BMW Championship and is in search of his second FedEx Cup title in three years, which would make him just the second golfer ever to win multiple FedEx Cups (Tiger Woods).

FedEx Cup Format Explained

Unlike in year’s past, where a golfer could win the Tour Championship – like Tiger Woods last year – but not take home the FedEx Cup, the PGA Tour has attempted to streamline the FedEx Cup Finale so it is absolutely obvious who can win it without having to do confusing numbers crunching.

That graphic now shows the starting position for all 30 golfers heading into the tournament at East Lake, based on where they were in the top-30 heading into the playoff finale, making it tougher for those who finished lower and easier for Justin Thomas, who led the FedEx Cup playoffs by virtue of his victory at the BMW Championship.

Brooks Koepka Still the Man to Beat

He may be starting three strokes back of Justin Thomas, but Brooks Koepka could cap off an incredible year by winning the FedEx Cup, to go along with his PGA Championship, WGC-FedEx St. Jude & CJ Cup titles.

Koepka is known for showing up on golf’s biggest stages but keeping it on cruise control at other lesser tournaments.

This one, however, would be a capper on a phenomenal year, so expect him to be fully invested and take home his first FedEx Cup title.

1. Rory McIlroy (+800): Starts five back of Thomas, but he’s won the 2016 tournament at East Lake and also has a runner-up finish at this venue. Top 10’s in six of his last nine tournaments.
2. Jon Rahm (+1400): No one in the world has been as consistently hot as Rahm, who will begin six back. In last seven events, he’s been T-3rd, T-2nd, WIN, T-11th, 7th, T-3rd, T-5th.
3. Tony Finau (+3300): At some point Finau will finally start putting together victories so what better place than in a limited 30-man field where he’ll need to be aggressive right off the hop, beginning seven back? Finished fourth last week and 3rd at the Open Championship last month. Far too good to be stuck on just one Tour win.
