What a Difference a Year Makes

It’s crazy the difference a year can make, especially when you’re 19 years old. Bianca Andreescu’s time at the US Open in 2018 didn’t go past the qualifying stage. This year she’s about to play in the third round and has won four straight sets.

Andreescu started the year ranked in the hundreds, and now she is currently ranked no. 15 with the opportunity to move up even more depending on outcomes in the US Open.

Her live ranking right now is actually no. 9, and from her reaction about cracking the top 10, she can’t believe it.

Tough Third-Round Opponent

Bianca Andreescu will face off against former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki on Friday afternoon, and it’ll definitely be her hardest match of the tournament so far.

But go back about eight months, and Andreescu defeated Wozniacki at the Auckland Open in straight sets, in a match that created a buzz around the tennis world.

That match launched Andreescu’s 2019 season. It also started something else. See that band around her arm that she wears during matches? She started wearing it in the Wozniacki match, kind of as a good luck charm.

Andreescu’s to Lose?

Prior to their second-round matchup, 33-year-old Belgian Kirsten Flipkens said that she believes Andreescu can win the 2019 U.S. Open. After Andreescu defeated her and advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time, Flipkens told Andreescu the same thing to her face.

Flipkens isn’t one to boast about her opponent, especially after a loss. But the way she spoke about Andreescu is oddly familiar to what she had to say about Australian Ashleigh Barty, when she lost to her in Cincinnati two years ago.

The then-21-year-old Barty beat Flipkens 6-1, 6-0. After that match, Flipkens said, “this kiddo will be top 10 in less than a year, if this is her usual level.” Less than two years later, Barty became world no. 1.

It’s safe to say that the women’s second quarter is Andreescu’s to lose.
