Best NFL Points Scored Over Plays
The time-honored theory is that defense wins championships but last season, offenses begged to differ.
The four top-scoring regular season teams – the Kansas City Chiefs (565), Los Angeles Rams (527), New Orleans Saints (504) and Patriots (436) – were the four conference finalists.
2018 NFL Regular-Season Points Scored Leaders
Team | Points | PPG |
---|---|---|
Kansas City Chiefs | 565 | 35.3 |
Los Angeles Rams | 527 | 32.9 |
New Orleans Saints | 504 | 31.5 |
New England Patriots | 436 | 27.2 |
Indianapolis Colts | 433 | 27.1 |
These are the teams that figure to light up scoreboards during the 2019 NFL season.
Kansas City Chiefs
In his first season as starting quarterback for the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes enjoyed a monster year. Throwing for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, he joined Peyton Manning as the only NFL QBs to compile a 5,000-yard, 50-TD season.
“It’s not about me trying to go out there and do this ‘second act’ … It’s about me being a part of the team.”

Mahomes also became the first QB to pass for over 5,000 yards in a season in both the NFL and NCAA.
Even if Mahomes dials it back some this season, it’s difficult to imagine that the Kansas City offense won’t compile at least 430 points. That works out to 26.9 points per game.
The Chiefs averaged 32.3 PPG over the past three seasons, two of which saw conservative-style QB Alex Smith running the show.
Play: Over 429.5 (+160)
Los Angeles Rams
The Rams scored 527 points last season, second only to the Chiefs. In 2017, LA was good for 10th in the NFL at 478 points. That’s an average of 29.85 points per game over the past two seasons, as well as an average of 477.6 points per season.

Jared Goff threw for 32 TDs last season. Todd Gurley ran for 17 TDs and caught four TD passes. He was one of six Rams with at least three receiving TDs
Even if Gurley’s suspect knee slows him, rookie Darrell Henderson looks to be the real deal.
Play: Over 429.5 (+160)
Atlanta Falcons
Steve Sarkisian and his wonky play calling are out. Dirk Koetter is back in as offensive coordinator.

Matt Ryan, one of the NFL’s most consistently productive QBs, has a deep receiving corps in Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley and Mohamed Sanu. Running back Devonta Freeman is healthy.
Play: Over 384.5 (+110)

Detroit Lions
Entering coach Matt Patricia’s second season, the Lions looked out of sync during an 0-4 preseason. There’s strong speculation that QB Matthew Stafford’s back isn’t right, and Detroit has no solid backup plan.

This looks to be a team that could go backward in a real hurry.
Play: Under 354.5 (-200)
New England Patriots
The Pats were also picked to the be the highest-scoring team in the league last season but it didn’t work out that way.

Brady is 42 and his numbers dipped in all categories last season. And he no longer has Rob Gronkowski at his disposal.
New England isn’t going off a cliff but the Patriots also aren’t going to end with up 445 points scored this season.
Play: Under 444.5 (-210)
Miami Dolphins
As bad as the Dolphins were last season, they still scored 281 points. They’ll be much worse this season.

Miami is averaging 17.3 PPG over the past three seasons.
That works out to 220 points over the course of 16 games.
Play: Under 274.5 (+170)
