Jameis Winston had a miserable performance in Week 1 of the NFL season.

After throwing three interceptions against the San Francisco 49ers — two which were returned for touchdowns — books released odds on whether or not Winston will be benched during the 2019 season, with “Yes” coming in as the -1000 favorite.

Is there any value in betting on the “No” at +500?

Will Jameis Winston Get Benched At Any Point In 2019?

It wasn’t exactly a great season debut for Winston, who went 20-of-36 for just 194 yards and one TD pass. Winston was sacked three times and had a passer rating of 45.4.

According to ESPN Stats and Information, Winston’s season debut marked the 17th career game that he’s had multiple interceptions, putting him ahead of Blake Bortles for most in the league since Winston’s rookie year in 2015. It also doesn’t help Winston’s cause that the 49ers had just two pick-offs during the 2018 season.

Winston’s Struggles Continue

Prior to the start of the NFL season, Winston was not on the list of early favorites to get benched this year. However, things changed drastically after his Week 1 performance.

Looking at Winston’s stats from last year’s season opener, the numbers are very similar. Winston was sacked twice, threw two interceptions while going 16-of-20 for 145 yards.

After two rock-solid seasons in 2015 and 2016 which saw the former first overall draft pick post 4,000-plus passing yards, Winston’s numbers have been on the decline ever since. Off-field issues that resulted in suspension as well as other injuries in the past limited Winston to 13 games in 2017 and just 11 a year ago.

In 2018, he had a career-low 2,992 yards and 19 TD passes during that span.

Overall, in 57 career games, Winston has thrown 61 interceptions and counting. Head coach Bruce Arians is known for turning around quarterbacks, but helping Winston reduce his pick-offs in 2019 may be a difficult project.

How can Winston turn around his season before it gets worse?

First and foremost, Winston has to get his primary target Mike Evans more involved. Evans, who is considered one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, had just two catches for 28 receiving yards in Week 1 against the Niners.

Bucs Don’t Have Many Options At QB

Another reason the Bucs keep rolling with Winston is because there really is no Plan B at quarterback. Soon to be 30-year-old Blaine Gabbert is the backup but has also been battling injuries this season.

Gabbert does have starting experience but probably not enough to be trusted as the No. 1 QB in Tampa Bay. Also, it’s not an upgrade from the struggling Winston.

Thought: Bruce Arians is good coaching QBs but he isn't a miracle worker. You can't fix Jameis Winston, the 2015 1st overall pick.

Winston has 101 INTs+Fumbles and only started 55 games.

With all that’s transpired early on, it’s easy to suggest that Winston will likely ride the pine at some point this season. In fact, it could happen sooner rather than later if he can’t adapt to Bruce Arians’ offense quickly.
