- The American Express tees off Thursday, January 16th
- Last years champion was a massive long shot – can it happen again?
- See the golfers with the best value to emerge victorious
The first PGA Tour event of 2020 on the mainland sees some of the games greats teeing it up in La Quinta, California though the field is not laden with tons of star power.
However, Rickie Fowler is the betting favorite with last year’s runner-up and two-time champion Phil Mickelson also competing, and hosting the tournament for the first time.
Last year lefty was denied his opportunity for a third title at this tournament from little known and longest of long shots Adam Long, who was a 500-1 dark horse entering the week. This event has an unpredictability to it with three courses being used in the rotation, with the final day having all players on the PGA West Stadium Course.

Kisner In Contention
Last week Kevin Kisner had a solid chance to earn his fourth career PGA Tour title in Hawaii, before settling for a T-4th finish in Waialae. He’s one of the top contenders this year.

That strong finish was preceded by very good tournaments at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions (T-14th) and the Hero World Challenge (T-7th), so Kisner is coming in with his confidence high. With a wide open event and lack of massive star power competing, Kisner is as good a bet that you could come up with this week.

Past Five Winners of The American Express
Year | Winner |
---|---|
2019 | Adam Long |
2018 | Jon Rahm |
2017 | Hudson Swafford |
2016 | Jason Dufner |
2015 | Bill Haas |
2020 The American Express Best Value Picks
- Matthew Wolff (+3300): 20-year-old whiz kid Matthew Wolff already has a victory under his belt at the 3M Open last summer. In his last four starts he’s posted three top-18 finishes. Oodles of talent that can win any time, any where.
- Harris English (+6600): Quietly had a really solid end to 2019 with four top-six finishes in his last six events. Placed T-11th in 2018 at this tournament. Amazing odds for a player on the upswing.
- Adam Long (+10000): Not quite as much of a crazy underdog like he was playing this tourney last year, but still great odds for a defending champion. Just four starts ago Long finished T-2nd in Mexico so when he gets in contention, often remains in the mix. Struggles with consistency but last week was his first missed cut in last ten starts.
- Bill Haas (+20000): Super deep dive with potential for massive upside. Winner of this tournament twice, back in 2010 and 2015. Hasn’t been playing overly well lately, thus the long odds, but if anyone knows how to win at this event it’s Bill Haas.
