It will probably come as no surprise that the Kansas City Chiefs are favored to win the Super Bowl.
It may come as a surprise that the big game under discussion in this instance is Super Bowl 55.
Sportsbooks aren’t waiting for the conclusion of Super Bowl 54 to launch odds on next season’s NFL championship game. They released their Super Bowl 55 future book for the first time on Wednesday and KC is the +800 chalk in the opening line.

KC is also the +130 chalk to win Super Bowl 54. In fact, the Chiefs were +700 chalk last year when sportsbooks issued their opening line on this season’s Super Bowl.
Chiefs a Surprising Chalk
It’s been 50 years since Kansas City won its most recent Super Bowl. The Chiefs topped the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl 4. That’s also the most recent appearance by the team in a Super Bowl game.
Now sportsbooks are offering odds that KC will do it two years in succession.

On the one hand, it’s easy to see why the Chiefs are the Super Bowl chalk both this year and next year. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the reigning NFL MVP, isn’t even close to entering the prime of his career, yet he’s already dominant under center. Other elite KC offensive weapons such as wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce also aren’t going anywhere.
The Chiefs are playing host to the AFC Championship Game for the second year in succession.
In the first 58 years of the franchise, the Kansas City Chiefs never hosted an AFC Championship. In Patrick Mahomes’s 2nd year as a starter, this will be their 2nd AFC Championship they’ve hosted. No deficit is too large with the MVP under center. What a performance.

However, back-to-back Super Bowl triumphs is a longshot at best. Even the New England Patriots’ juggernaut of the last two decades managed to do so just once, in Super Bowls 33 and 34. And that’s the only time it’s happened since 2000.
Patriots Gamesmanship
Speaking of the Patriots, has the time finally arrived where New England isn’t considered elite in terms of Super Bowl contention?
The Patriots are fourth in sportsbooks’ opening odds at +1200. A year ago, the Pats were also fourth in the opening Super Bowl 54 odds at +1000.

New England and opening line Super Bowl favorites used to be synonymous.
With Tom Brady’s future uncertain, that’s no longer the case.
Disrespecting the Bills
The Buffalo Bills made the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. In QB Josh Allen, running back Devin Singletary and defensive tackle Ed Oliver, Buffalo has a stellar core that figures to grow.
As well, the Bills had the #3 NFL defense. It’s a unit that also rated in the top 10 in scoring defense and against the pass and the run.

Yet sportsbooks put the Super Bowl 55 odds on the Bills at +4000. If New England is finally going to slide, the Bills are most likely to step forward in the AFC East.
Give an honorable mention to the Philadelphia Eagles (+3300). Gutted by injury this season, Philly still won the NFC East. What might a healthy Eagles team accomplish?
Steelers All About Hype
If there’s an NFL team that’s living on its reputation, it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two years in a row, the playoffs were there for the taking and this team fumbled away the opportunity.

Expecting them to bounce back with a broken-down Ben Roethlisberger back at QB is simply buying into the hype. If you bet Pittsburgh at +1600, consider it a donation.
Stay away from the Chicago Bears (+2500) as well. Mitch Trubisky is still their QB, you know. Avoid the Atlanta Falcons (+2500) at all costs. How many years in a row must this team underachieve before people accept they’re not all that?
