- Severe tire degradation guarantees strategy chaos at Sepang even if the race stays dry.
- Thunderstorms could turn the entire running order into a weather lottery. The race begins Sunday at 3 a.m. ET on Apple TV.

Sepang has spent the weekend chewing through tires, threatening thunderstorms and politely reminding everyone that Formula 1 has brought an entirely new generation of cars to a circuit where nobody has meaningful race data.
That should make handicapping easy.
The dry-weather version of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix already contains plenty of uncertainty. Tire degradation has been severe throughout the weekend, making two pit stops feel like the minimum and three stops a legitimate possibility. Every additional stop creates another opportunity for an undercut, overcut, slow tire change, poorly timed safety car or strategist to discover a brand-new way of ruining someone’s afternoon.
Then there is the weather.
At the time of writing, the forecast shows a 60% to 80% chance of rain around the race, with thunderstorms possible. If the rain arrives, we can place all the tire-degradation calculations into a dumpster and light them on fire. Nobody has significant wet-race experience with these regulations, and Sepang provides enough standing water, changing grip and limited visibility to transform the running order quickly.
We’re embracing that uncertainty without treating every driver at triple-digit odds like a brilliant investment. The objective is to find drivers who can win or outperform their market prices in either condition.
A dry race brings multiple stops and competing strategies. A wet race brings tire gambles, mistakes and attrition. Either version should create more variance than the current prices fully acknowledge.
F1 Bahrain Grand Prix Predictions
Outright Winner
- 0.25u – Andrea Kimi Antonelli (+375, Caesars; play to +325)
- 0.14u – Lewis Hamilton (+750, BetRivers; play to +650)
- 0.07u – Charles Leclerc (+1600, Marketwide; play to +1400)
- 0.04u – George Russell (+3000, BetRivers/TheScore; play to +2500)
This is a portfolio rather than four independent declarations that we have discovered the winner.
We’ve dutched the four selections for a total investment of 0.50 units, producing approximately 0.69 to 0.74 units of profit depending on which member of the portfolio wins. It isn’t four bets. It’s one equation wearing a rain slicker.
Our model projects Antonelli first, Hamilton third, Russell fourth and Leclerc fifth. They start third, second, seventh and fourth, respectively. Every driver in the group has enough speed to win a dry race if the tire strategy works out.
Rain expands those paths.
Antonelli owns the best projection but carries the uncertainty of managing these cars through Sepang spray. Hamilton offers the experience and front-row starting position. Leclerc and Russell provide considerably larger prices without requiring the type of miracle usually associated with drivers listed at 16/1 and 30/1.
Max Verstappen remains the most likely winner, especially if the conditions become difficult. We simply have no interest in laying nearly 2-to-1 on the favorite when the race could involve three pit stops, six tire compounds and a weather radar that looks like modern art.
- 0.25u – Lewis Hamilton to Win Without Antonelli (+500, Caesars)
Hamilton can cash this wager by winning the race or finishing second behind Antonelli. That distinction matters because our model projects Antonelli first and Hamilton third, while both drivers start inside the top three.
If Antonelli wins, Hamilton can still cash this ticket by finishing second. He has to beat everyone except Antonelli.
Top-Two Finish
- 0.397u – Lewis Hamilton (+175, DraftKings)
- 0.137u – George Russell (+700, DraftKings)
- 0.091u – Lando Norris (+1100, DraftKings)
We’ve dutched the three top-two tickets across a 0.625-unit investment, producing approximately 0.47 units of profit if any single one cashes and considerably more if two of our drivers decide to occupy the available seats.
Hamilton starts second and gives us another way to benefit from his combination of track position and wet-weather experience.
Russell must climb from seventh, but our model projects him to finish 3.7. Norris starts fifth with a 4.6 projection. Neither driver needs a completely absurd result, yet DraftKings is offering 7/1 and 11/1.
Multiple pit stops can move either into contention during a dry race. Rain could do it before everyone reaches the first corner.
Top-Six Finish
- 0.382u – Oscar Piastri (+150, DraftKings/TheScore)
- 0.147u – Pierre Gasly (+550, Caesars)
- 0.096u – Liam Lawson (+900, Caesars)
We’ve again dutched the three top-six selections across a 0.625-unit investment, producing approximately 0.33 units of profit if any one cashes and considerably more if the weather helps multiple drivers crash the party.
Piastri starts sixth and is projected to finish 5.2. We’re receiving plus money for a front-running car to hold its current position.
Gasly and Lawson require more help. They start ninth and 11th, with our model projecting them ninth and 10th. Neither would be an obvious top-six selection in a calm race.
Fortunately, calm appears to have missed its flight to Malaysia.
Bahrain Grand Prix Picks: Matchups and Groups
You may notice the smaller unit allocations throughout the card. That’s by design. We trust the process, but we have absolutely no idea what the heck these cars are going to do if the sky opens.
Bahrain Grand Prix Matchup Bets
- 0.375u – Kimi Antonelli over Max Verstappen (+220, theScore Bet)
Our model projects Antonelli first and Verstappen second. The wet-weather edge belongs to Verstappen, but +220 is a significant price for the model’s top-ranked driver to beat one opponent.
- 0.25u – Lewis Hamilton over Max Verstappen (+400, TheScore)
This is driven more by price and conditions than the model. Hamilton starts alongside Verstappen, and +400 implies only a 20% probability that he finishes ahead.
- 0.5u – George Russell over Isack Hadjar (+105, TheScore)
Russell starts one position ahead and owns a 3.7 projection, compared with 6.0 for Hadjar. This is the strongest matchup on the card because the better-projected driver is still available at plus money.
- 0.75u – Charles Leclerc over Isack Hadjar (-150, TheScore)
Leclerc starts fourth and is projected at 4.1. Hadjar starts eighth and is projected at 6.0. The price isn’t exciting, but the advantages in track position and projected finish are large enough to survive the additional variance.
- 0.575u – Carlos Sainz over Fernando Alonso (-115, TheScore)
Our model projects Sainz at 13.4 and Alonso at 15.5. Alonso starts one position ahead and would normally become more attractive in the rain, but Aston Martin keeps treating mechanical reliability as an optional subscription.
Alonso may be the right driver for the conditions. We would still need his car to participate.
Even we aren’t that reckless.
- 0.25u – Oscar Piastri over Lando Norris (+190, TheScore)
Norris owns the slightly better projection and starts one position ahead, but the gap is too small to justify Piastri returning nearly 2/1. This is a price play between teammates who should have nearly identical equipment and strategy options.
- 0.375u – Sergio Perez over Valtteri Bottas (+150, TheScore)
Our model projects Perez at 19.4 and Bottas at 19.6. That is a coin flip wearing a necktie. We’ll take +150 instead of paying significant juice on the other side.
Bahrain Grand Prix Group Bets
- 0.25u – Kimi Antonelli to Win Group 1 (+320, Caesars)
Opponents: Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris
Antonelli is our highest-projected driver in Group 1. He must beat Verstappen, Leclerc and Norris, but the +320 price provides more upside than the head-to-head wager against Verstappen alone.
- 0.25u – George Russell to Win Group 2 (+350, Caesars)
Opponents: Lewis Hamilton, Isack Hadjar, Oscar Piastri
Our model projects Russell only three-tenths behind Hamilton despite the enormous difference in price. Russell also projects comfortably ahead of Hadjar and Piastri, making +350 the most attractive number in the group.
- 0.25u – Liam Lawson to Win Group 3 (+165, Caesars)
Opponents: Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz, Oliver Bearman
Lawson trails Gasly by less than one projected position, making +165 preferable to Gasly at -158. Lawson also doesn’t need to approach the top six to cash this wager. He only has to beat three midfield opponents.
- 0.25u – Nico Hulkenberg to Win Group 4 (+550, Caesars)
Opponents: Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto, Arvid Lindblad
Our model projects Bortoleto first in the group, with Hulkenberg and Colapinto tied behind him. Bortoleto owns the starting-position advantage, but Hulkenberg brings significantly more experience into conditions these cars have never encountered.

If the race stays dry, tire degradation and multiple-stop strategies give our outrights and positional underdogs several routes forward. If it rains, nobody knows exactly how these cars will behave over a full race distance.
We’ll be learning together.
Then, immediately afterward, we’ll pretend everything went exactly according to plan.
