Aryna Sabalenka’s Tough Road

Sitting at number 12 in the world, Aryna Sabalenka didn’t have an easy pathway to the semifinals. In the first round she took on Su-Wei Hsieh, a player she had never defeated before.

It seemed as though the pattern of Sabalenka falling short against Hsieh was going to continue as she fell behind one set and was a few games away from losing the match.

Somehow, someway Sabalenka battled back and moved on to a contest with Bernarda Pera. It wasn’t easy, but Sabalenka got the job done in straight sets. Waiting for Sabalenka in the following round was two-time grand slam winner Simona Halep.

Sabalenka had few issues as she broke her multiple times and routed her in straight sets. If she expects her run to continue then she’ll have to take out another tough foe.

Dayana Yastremska Has Looked Impressive

Dayana Yastremska may have come up short in her first contest of the year against Kiki Bertens, but she has bounced back in a major way.

In the first round of the WTA Adelaide International, Yastremska was out of this world against Timea Babos. She followed that up with a one-sided beating against Angelique Kerber before Kerber was ultimately forced to retire from the contest.

Donna Vekic was expected to give Yastremska a true test but that statement proved to be false as she was also routed in straight sets.

It’s been a dominant run for Yastremska up until this point, but she will now have possibly the best player remaining in the tournament standing across the net from her in the semifinals.

Both Aryna Sabalenka and Dayana Yastremska are no strangers to one another’s game. Although Sabalenka is the higher-ranked player, she has had her fair share of problems in this matchup.

With the most recent matchup coming just last year on the clay courts, Sabalenka will have to battle a few demons if she wants to leave this contest with a win.

Who to Pick: Aryna Sabalenka

As previously mentioned, Sabalenka has historically had trouble with Yastremska. No matter the surface, Yastremska has come out on top.

If you want any indication of Sabalenka being ready to battle her issues with Yastremska, than look no further then her first-round matchup against Su-Wei Hsieh. Sabalenka not only defeated an opponent that she has always had issues with, but she did so while down a set and a break.

That performance should instill some much-needed confidence going into this one. Not to mention the fashion in which Sabalenka dismantled Simona Halep should also have her feeling good about her chances.

Yastremska may have Sabalenka’s number but she’ll be changing it as she’ll pick up her first win against her to make the finals.
