The third version of ‘The Match’ is upon us, as five-time major champion Phil Mickelson tees up with Charles Barkley to try and take down the duo of Steph Curry and Peyton Manning.
This is the first time in ‘The Match’ series that Tiger Woods is sitting out, leaving Lefty to carry the always entertaining but poor golfer Barkley against two players who have proven they can play at a high level.
The event will contribute toward and highlight diversity, equality and inclusion through donations to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), while raising awareness and spotlighting opportunities for diversity and equality in sports.
The golf course will be Stone Canyon Golf Club in Arizona, which is owned by Mickelson Golf Properties. Despite having an intricate knowledge of the track, Mickelson and Barkley will be in tough to claim victory after the opening line has shifted even more to make Manning and Curry the favorites.
The Match III – Champions for Change Odds
Team | Odds |
---|---|
Steph Curry & Peyton Manning | -175 |
Phil Mickelson & Charles Barkley | +138 |
Odds taken November 23rd at DraftKings
Mickelson Will Get Little Help from Barkley
Phil will need to use the confidence gained from winning two recent Champions Tour events because his game on the PGA Tour and specifically his putting has been lacking. The three-time green jacket winner was frustrated at Augusta National on the dance floor, where he finished a pedestrian T-55th. The main culprit was the flat stick as he was tied for dead last in putting average of those players who made the cut.
The Match is just over one week away!@StephenCurry30 I try to not let logic, reason, or Chuck’s swing get in the way of my smack talk, so let me just say, you and Peyton are going to be taken down by the worst swing in golf and “that’s gonna leave a mark.” (Tommy Boy) pic.twitter.com/iTfUVCzvBp

If Mickelson gets wild off the tee, as he’s prone to do, it could be a long day for the duo in the modified alternate shot format – which sees each player tee off, then pick their best drive and alternate shots throughout the hole. If Lefty is wild, it’s not likely Sir Charles will be able to bail him out.
Bombs, hellacious seeds and Charles Barkley’s golf swing are just a week away 🔥

The ‘Round Mound of Rebound’ is guaranteeing a victory in this event, but he’s been prone to make wild proclamations and guarantees in the past that have fallen short. While he’s had a long time to prepare for the match, it’s hard to see him being appreciably better to help out Mickelson much which could result in a long day.
Manning and Curry Should Complement Each Other Well
In the most recent iteration of the match, Peyton Manning showed he was up to the challenge, much like he was throughout his Hall of Fame NFL career.
Manning had very few loose shots and was way better than his QB counterpart Tom Brady, which led to Peyton and Tiger prevailing.
They're gonna have to put that 24 second shot clock on Chuck for this thing. He's gonna be burning daylight out there @PhilMickelson 😂😂😂 #TheMatch pic.twitter.com/1Wb38AL9QC

The trash talking has begun in earnest with Curry getting the better of Chuck. Curry has been solid in previous Korn Ferry Tour events also. In 2017, he posted a pair of 74’s, and then the following year, he had a very solid 71 before an ugly 86 the next day.
Count it! 👌😂 The “Phlop Shot” gets the @StephenCurry30 treatment. Look out @PhilMickelson….he’s comin’ for you. #TheMatch #ChampionsForChange pic.twitter.com/7vDKTs5QZL

Despite Phil obviously being better than the duo of Curry and Manning, his partner offers little help and that’s where the downfall for the duo will be, especially if Phil is wild off the tee, or if his putting woes persist.
The choice is clear for “The Match III: Champions for Change”, even if it isn’t a huge payout.
Pick: Steph Curry/Peyton Manning Win (-175)
