Make no bones about it, this is the “ruffest” assignment of all of the Super Bowl props covered at SBD: giving betting advice for Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl. The annual event that efforts to find homes for sheltered dogs all across America are having its 17th edition on Feb. 7, starting at 2 PM EST.

This is the seventh year the Puppy Bowl has been doing the team format and we’re once again embarking on a journey through all of the bets surrounding this year’s game. There aren’t as many props to choose from as years past, but there are some exciting new additions to the 2021 show. Example: Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart are hosting this year! Won’t that be fun?

For all the credit Tom Brady gets for making it to 10 Super Bowls, he’s got nothing on these two organizations that have played in every Puppy Bowl since 2015. Sure, the only consistent thru line each year is the team names (even their bandana colors have changed over the years). But the rivalry is fierce with these two. The series is in a dead heat right now with both teams winning three. After a trio of blowouts to start, there have been some real squeakers, and we’re not just talking about the chew toys.

There are no real trends in this six-game sample, other than the fact that Team Fluff has never actually held a series lead. Are they due to change that this year? I don’t know. But somebody does!

As you can imagine, it would be almost impossible to keep track of 70 puppies (and a kitty halftime show as well) in a live studio. So the Puppy Bowl is filmed well in advance, usually in a Manhattan sound stage in October. However, COVID-19 opened some new opportunities for the Puppy Bowl, including filming in the home arena of the Adirondack Thunder. Apparently, all those extra precautions made for an interesting product.

There’s been a few preview clips of the game, but not much can be gleaned outside of the fact that a puppy named Chunky Monkey is all tuckered out. A member of Team Fluff, that surely can’t be a good sign!

Let’s stick with the favorite here. The linemakers should have kibbles of knowledge about this game, and Team Ruff is due after losing three of the last four.

Much like the outcome of the game, the MVP has also been split evenly between genders over the last six years. Last year, Gina, a 12-week-old Lab and Chow Chow mix helped female bettors cash in.

If there is any trend worth chasing, it’s that four of the last six MVPs were Lab or Chow mixes. There are 11 dogs like that in this year’s field, including Jett, a two-legged dog that is just the coolest!

Most of those Lab or Chox mix puppers were male, and some of the ones that weren’t included the aforementioned sleepy Chunky Monkey. I think this year, it’s time to male it in.
