- The Washington Capitals are -200 home favorites over the Vancouver Canucks
- Washington is 1-3-1 straight up over the club’s last five home games
- Vancouver has lost its last three games in a row – see below who we like
The Vancouver Canucks are embroiled in a losing streak. Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals just escaped a skid of their own.
These two NHL teams from opposite coasts get together on Sunday. Vancouver is currently 0-3 on a five-game road trip. Washington blanked the New York Islanders 2-0 on Saturday to halt an 0-2-2 skid.
It’s the hometown Capitals that oddsmakers like to skate away with the two points in this Sunday afternoon clash. The Canucks are 1-4 straight up in their last five visits to Washington.

Canucks vs Capitals Injury Report
Vancouver goaltender Jaroslav Halak (COVID-19 protocol) is out. Forwards Alex Chiasson, Justin Dowling and Ashton Sautner are also in COVID-19 protocol.

Canucks forwards Micheal Ferland (concussion) and Brandon Sutter (illness) and defensemen Travis Hamonic (lower-body injury) and Brady Keeper (leg) are all out.
Defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Carl Hagelin each have been out the past two games for Washington after entering COVID-19 protocol. Forward Anthony Mantha (shoulder surgery) has missed the past 28 games.
Demko An All-Star For Vancouver
Halak was to have started Vancouver’s last game, a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. However, once Halak tested positive for COVID-19 in the morning, that put Thatcher Demko in goal and taxi-squad member Spencer Martin on the bench as his backup.

Without Halak, it’s unlikely the Canucks will throw Martin to the wolves in the second game of back to backs. Demko will be Vancouver’s rep in the NHL All-Star Game. He’s far and away been the Canucks’ best player this season. Demko is 6-1 in his last seven starts.

Capitals | Ilya Samsonov | 13-3-3 | .903 | 2.76 |
Making his first start since Dec. 19, Vitek Vanecek made 23 saves as the Capitals blanked the Islanders on Saturday. That almost certainly means that Washington will be going back to #1 goalie Ilya Samsonov for Sunday’s game.

Samsonov is just 2-2-2 over his last six decisions. However, Samsonov is 7-1-1 at home this season.
Canucks vs Capitals Prediction
This will be the first meeting between the Canucks and Capitals since Nov. 23, 2019. Vancouver took a 2-1 shootout decision in that one to end a four-game slide against Washington.
