Wednesday will be the rubber match of a three-game set between the Chicago White Sox (68-67, 34-31 away) and the Seattle Mariners (76-59, 35-29 home) at T-Mobile Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 pm ET.
The White Sox will likely hand Michael Kopech the ball here as he returns from a minor knee ailment, while the M’s counter with their ace and trade deadline acquisition, Luis Castillo.

Chicago vs Seattle Probable Pitchers
Chicago hasn’t officially announced that Kopech will start here, but all signs point to it after a very good bullpen session on Sunday. He’s been out since August 22nd when the hard-throwing righty exited early with knee soreness. When healthy, Kopech is dealing.
Luis Robert kept it short, sweet and in English about his wrist.
“Very good. I’m good.”
Michael Kopech expects he’ll have a pitch limit tomorrow but doesn’t know what it is. Said his leg issue went away a few days after his Kansas City start.

The 26-year-old is 4-9 with a 3.58 ERA in 23 starts this season, striking out 98 in 110.2 innings. The 55 walks are slightly concerning, but he’s usually able to pitch out of trouble. Kopech has yet to face the Mariners in 2022. In fact, he’s only pitched two innings against them.

Since arriving in Seattle, Castillo is fully living up to the hype. He’s 2-1 with a 2.39 ERA in six outings with the M’s, collecting 43 punchouts in 37.2 frames and holding opponents to a .227 average. As you can see above, his ERA is not too shabby for the season as a whole too, sitting at 2.72.

Castillo’s last outing was yet another gem, grabbing his sixth victory after tossing six innings of scoreless baseball vs. Cleveland, allowing only five hits in the process. He’s not too familiar with the White Sox, but Castillo’s lone career appearance went well, surrendering one run in 6.2 innings.
Crunch Time for Chicago
Every single game matters for Chicago right now and at this rate, it appears their best shot at actually making the postseason will be through the division. The AL Central is extremely tight, with the White Sox sitting just two games back of Cleveland for first place. Minnesota trails the Guardians by one game. It’s truly a toss-up as to who could be crowned champions.

The absence of manager Tony La Russa doesn’t exactly help Chicago, though. He’s currently away from the team due to a medical issue and with the most important few weeks of the season approaching, it would be ideal to have their boss back.
Mariners in Great Shape
There are still a lot of games left, but it’s looking more and more like Seattle’s postseason drought will finally end. They’re second in the AL Wild Card just behind the Rays and are playing fantastic baseball at the moment, posting an 8-2 record in their last 10 games.

Before Chicago came to town, the M’s swept the Guardians on the road and also won three straight against the Tigers. With Castillo on the bump here, Seattle will be lacking no shortage of confidence he can guide them to another win. Hopefully, AL Rookie of the Year odds favorite (-500) will provide some offense.
