  • No. 12 BYU, Kansas and Western Kentucky are live underdogs in college football Week 3
  • Kansas is fourth in the FBS in scoring at 52.5 points per game
  • Read below for betting odds, analysis and upset picks for college football Week 3

No. 12 BYU is a 3.5-point road underdog at Oregon this week after stopping Baylor 26-20 in double overtime at home last week. The Cougars missed two potential game-winning field goals late before winning (and covering the 3-point number) on a touchdown run in the second overtime.

BYU, Kansas and Western Kentucky are 2-0 SU and ATS. KU is 2-0 for the first since 2011.

Here are three upset picks to consider for college football Week 3.

BYU vs Oregon Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
BYU Cougars +3.5 (-110) +133 Over 57 (-108)
Oregon Ducks -3.5 (-110) -165 Under 57 (-113)

Upset Pick No. 1: BYU Rolls On

The better team is getting the points here, which makes it a simple pick. No. 12 BYU has scheduled up this season in its final year as an independent before joining the Big 12 in 2023, and it has the talent to make it work.

The Cougars have a big edge at quarterback, even though they have only a 42.9 percent implied win probability. Fifth-year junior Jaren Hall is considered an NFL prospect, and he has completed 67.6 percent passes for 522 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in victories over South Florida (50-21) and then-No. 10 Baylor last Saturday.

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, a transfer from Auburn, was hit-or-miss in his career with the Tigers and was overwhelmed in the Ducks’ 49-3 loss to Georgia in the season opener. He recovered with 277 yards passing and five touchdowns in a confidence-building 70-14 victory over FCS Eastern Washington.

BYU has an added physical presence on both lines, and while it had trouble moving the ball on the ground against Baylor, it relied on Hall and wide receiver Chase Roberts. Roberts had 122 yards receiving and a touchdown, and he also threw a 22-yard scoring pass to Hall.

BYU starting receivers Puka Nacua (ankle) and Gunner Romney (undisclosed) missed the Baylor game, and their status is unknown.

BYU is 6-1 SU in its last seven road games, and the total has gone over in five of the last seven Cougars’ games. Oregon is 3-6 ATS in its last nine at home.

Kansas vs Houston Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Kansas Jayhawks +10 (-115) +265 Over 58 (-113)
Houston Cougar -10 (-106) -345 Under 58 (-108)

Upset Pick No. 2: Kansas Stays Hot

There is still plenty of room on the Kansas bandwagon, but that might not last a whole lot longer. The Jayhawks have the primary pieces in place — coach Lance Leipold, quarterback Jalon Daniels and belief — for a continued ascent.

Daniels has completed 33 of 47 passes for 408 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in victories over Tennessee Tech and West Virginia. Daniels threw the go-ahead touchdown pass in overtime before the defense also scored in a 55-42 win at West Virginia. Daniels also ran for a career-high 85 yards against the Mountaineers.

The Jayhawks are 3-2 SU and 5-0 ATS since Daniels took over as a starter in a 57-56 overtime victory at Texas late last season. They are only one victory short of exceeding their expected CFP win totals odds.

Houston quarterback Clayton Tune was inconsistent in the Cougars’ overtime victory over UTSA and 33-30 loss to  Texas Tech. Tune was 20 of 39 against the Red Raiders, and the Cougars gave up 468 yards total offense. They are giving up 34 points per game.

  • Pick: Kansas ML (+265)

Western Kentucky vs Indiana Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers +6.5 (-110) +190 Over 60 (-110)
Indiana Hoosiers -6.5 (-110) -250 Under 60 (-112)

Upset Pick No. 3: Hilltoppers Get Revenge

Western Kentucky has had an extra week to prepare for Indiana, which is off to a 2-0 start under transfer quarterback Connor Bazelak, a two-year starter at Missouri, and new offensive and defensive coordinators.

Hilltoppers’ new quarterback Austin Reed has been a good fit in Tyson Helton’s pass-first offense. Reed has completed 65 percent of his passes for 547 yards with seven touchdowns at two interceptions. Reed, who beat out West Virginia transfer Jarret Doege, won the NCAA Division II title at West Florida in 2021.

WKU had 458 yards total offense, 365 passing, in a 33-31 loss to since-departed Michael Penix Jr. and the Hoosiers in Bloomington last season. The Hilltoppers are 7-3-1 in their last 11 as a road dog and 9-3 ATS after a bye in their last 12.

  • Pick: WKU ML (+190)
