As the Big East regular season wraps up, two top teams play on Wednesday, March 5. #20 Marquette (22-7, 7-5 away, 13-5 Big East, 14-14-1 ATS) has rattled off two straight blowout wins and now hit the road to take on UConn (20-9, 12-2 home, 12-6 Big East, 11-17-1 ATS).

Tipoff for this Big East matchup is scheduled for 8:30 pm ET.

Marquette vs UConn Prediction

UConn has owned this series of late, going 9-2 against Marquette since joining the new Big East. The Huskies won 77-69 on the road against them back in February this season, and I expect a similar outcome tonight mostly due to UConn’s interior presence. Tarris Reed Jr., the 6’10 forward, has scored 24 and 20 points in his last two games and should cause fits for Marquette. They do not have the size to stop him, and the Huskies already have a slight rebounding advantage statistically over the Golden Eagles.

The biggest issue for UConn this season has been their turnovers. In the first matchup between these teams, UConn had 25 turnovers but still found a way to win. If the Huskies can limit their turnovers, they can run away with this one at home. Marquette is a team that applies pressure so that task will be easier said than done for the Huskies.

Even after two big wins, Marquette has been inconsistent, especially over the last few weeks. They shoot the second-most threes in the Big East, but they are just 32% from behind the arc. That is a recipe for disaster against UConn, who is great at defending the three. Solo Ball is the leading scorer for UConn and is shooting over 42% from three.

Marquette vs UConn Pick

  • UConn -4.5 (-105)

UConn has the advantage on the interior and is the better three-point shooting team, so I like them to cover the spread here. Marquette has lost their last four Big East games against teams above .500, and they have not been particularly close.

I like the Huskies to win by at least five points against their Big East rival. They are not a guarantee to make the NCAA Tournament yet, so Dan Hurley will have his team extra motivated in this one.
