With their season on the brink and their best player on ice, the Boston Celtics (67-25, 43-48-1 ATS) answered the bell on Wednesday night with a dominant 127-102 win over the New York Knicks (58-35, 47-45-1 ATS in Game 5 of their best-of-seven series. Still trailing 3-2 as the series shifts back to the Big Apple for Friday’s Game 6, the Celtics – for the first time this postseason – find themselves as betting underdogs.

Boston and New York flew over the 208.0 total in Game 5 on Wednesday, combining for 229 points, thanks largely to a 68-point second half from the Celtics, who went into halftime tied at 59-59 with the Knicks.

Jaylen Brown (21.9 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 2.8 APG postseason) and Derrick White (18.3 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 3.9 APG postseason) came up huge in Tatum’s absence. White had a game-high 34 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including a red-hot 7-of-13 from three. Brown had an efficient 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting plus a game-high 12 assists.

Do-everything guard Josh Hart (12.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 4.9 APG) had a team-high 24 points in a losing effort for the Knicks, going 5-of-9 from three. Jalen Brunson (30.1 PPG, RPG, 8.0 APG postseason) added 22 but was just 7-of-17 from the floor.

New York remains a heavy favorite to advance to the East finals in the NBA playoff bracket, but their odds took a serious hit after losing Game 5. The Knicks were -525 favorites to win the series before Game 5 and are now -330 favorites heading into Game 6. The Celtics’ odds to advance to their fourth straight Eastern Conference final improved from +400 to +250.

In the NBA championship odds, New York faded from +450 to +550. The Celtics improved to +1900.
