College Baseball Pick #1: Arizona vs North Carolina

Game 2 was about the most inopportune time for North Carolina pitching to go into the tank.

After an 18-2 clubbing to kick off the Chapel Hill Super Regional, the Tar Heels gave up a season-high 10 runs and 16 hits, dropping a 10-8 decision to set up the decisive winner-take-all.

The Wildcats still had to clutch up to plate those runs: six of their 10 scores came from two-out situations, capped by Maddox Mihalakis coming through with a 2-run single in a 4-run seventh inning to take the lead for good.

It comes down to a pair of freshman starters Sunday, as Arizona trots out right-hander Smith Bailey, who is 3-3 on the year with a 3.97 ERA. He’s pitched beyond his years of late, surrendering just three runs over his last three starts, including the title game of the Big 12 Tournament, and in the regional vs Cal Poly.

Carolina has the third-best ERA in college baseball, but they’re now on their no. 3 starter, freshman Ryan Lynch, but he’s been the big-game closer on this roster.

His last two starts were in the ACC Championship final (no runs, two hits over four innings) and the winner-take-all regional vs Oklahoma (two runs, five hits over five innings), coming away victorious in each.

UNC is one of betting favorites to take it all, and they recover from that Saturday blip to advance to the CWS in back-to-back years, but Arizona is going to make them earn it.

CWS Pick #2: Miami vs Louisville

There is definitely one ACC team going to the World Series. After the Miami Hurricanes’ 9-6 win Saturday over Louisville Cardinals, it’s a one-game playoff to decide it.

The Cardinals opened the Super Regional with a dominant 8-1 win.

The books might have priced this one a little bit high in the finale, as the Hurricanes were just 10th in the ACC in total runs, averaging 6.4 per game.

Their nine runs scored in the must-win Game 2 is just the second time in six games they’ve gone Over six runs in a contest in the NCAA Tournament.

Louisville does have a more potent offense, as they hit .305 this season and were fourth in total runs in the conference, but the eight-run Game 1 win matches their highest output of the postseason, staying to six runs or less in the other three games.

I think the teams got their offense blow-ups out of the way early, and this one should resemble a closer, lower-scoring affair to determine who goes to Omaha.

College World Series Pick #3: Florida State vs Oregon State

It’s been one of the most tightly contested Super Regionals, pushed to a third and deciding game after the Seminoles topped Oregon State 3-1 on Saturday.

Florida State is averaging just 5.6 runs per game during the NCAA Tournament, and have yet to cross five runs in the Super Regional.

It’s been a tale of two regionals for the Beavers, who seem to have left all that bat pop back in the Corvallis Regional.

YouTube video

They’ve scored six runs across two games vs FSU; seven runs is the fewest they scored in any of the four games in the regionals, averaging a whopping 12.5 runs per game.

UNC gets much of the pitching praise in the ACC, but the Seminoles were third on the year with a 4.76 ERA, while holding teams to a paltry .236 average.

FSU pitching has surrendered 19 hits over two games, but they’ve also stranded 17 Beavers on base, and limited Oregon State to a 6-for-16 average with runners in scoring position.

They might not win Sunday, but if Florida State’s pitching holds up again, it will have a chance, likely in a low-scoring affair.
