The Edmonton Oilers pulled off one of the most incredible comebacks in Stanley Cup Final history Thursday night, rallying from a 3-0 first-period deficit to beat the Florida Panthers 5-4 in overtime.

Leon Draisaitl’s overtime winner with 11:18 left tied the best-of-seven series at 2-2 and shifted the Stanley Cup odds.

This marked the first time ever that a team overcame a three-goal deficit in the first period of a Stanley Cup Final game to win. Teams leading 3-0 after the first period had been a perfect 37-0 in Final games before Edmonton broke that streak.

The Panthers vs Oilers odds have tightened dramatically. Florida remains a slight favorite at -115, but Edmonton has closed the gap from being heavy underdogs to nearly even money at -105.

Earlier in the series, the Panthers were commanding -250 favorites after their dominant 6-1 Game 3 win. Now it’s essentially a coin flip.

Draisaitl Nets Game 4 OT Winner

Draisaitl was the hero, scoring his fourth overtime goal of the 2025 playoffs to set the NHL record for most OT goals in a single postseason. His winner deflected off Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola’s skate and slid through Sergei Bobrovsky’s five-hole.

Matthew Tkachuk got Florida rolling with two power-play goals in the first period, but Edmonton responded with three straight in the second from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Darnell Nurse, and Vasily Podkolzin. Calvin Pickard was outstanding in relief of Stuart Skinner, stopping 22 of 23 shots after entering in the second period.

Sam Reinhart’s equalizer with just 19.5 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, setting up one of the latest tying goals in Final history.

The puck line shows Edmonton as -1.5 goal favorites at +200, though a blowout isn’t expected given that three of four games have gone to overtime. Four of the last five games between these teams, dating back to last year’s Final, have been decided by one goal.

Game 5 is Saturday, June 14th at 8:10 PM ET at Rogers Place.

Goaltending Storyline

Coach Kris Knoblauch’s decision to pull Stuart Skinner for Calvin Pickard proved crucial. Pickard posted a .957 save percentage and is now 7-0 this postseason, likely earning the Game 5 start. Bobrovsky will look to bounce back after allowing five goals on 32 shots in Game 4.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were shut out in Game 3 but responded with authority. McDavid had two assists while Draisaitl contributed one goal and two assists, including the OT winner. McDavid has 42 points in 18 playoff games this season.

For Florida, Tkachuk finally broke through with his first goals of the series, scoring twice on the power play to stake the Panthers to their early lead.

What’s Next

The series returns to Edmonton where the Oilers will try to take their first series lead since Game 1. Whoever wins Game 5 will be one victory from the Stanley Cup, making Saturday night potentially the most important game of the season for both clubs.

With the series tied 2-2 and momentum clearly on Edmonton’s side after their historic comeback, Game 5 should deliver another awesome chapter in what’s already been an epic Stanley Cup Final rematch.
