Egyptian superpower Al Ahly takes on MLS darling Inter Miami Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami in the first game of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

FIFA expanded the format to include 32 club teams from across the various federations, and the draw includes Manchester City, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

Inter Miami got the last spot representing the host country (not because they have Messi, wink, wink) and will open Group A play Saturday against Al Ahly.

I have my eye on the odds for tonight’s FIFA Club World Cup opener between Inter Miami and Al Ahly, and have your prediction and pick.

What Is FIFA Club World Cup?                                                                                                                    

It is a global tournament pitting 32 club teams from the various FIFA-sponsored confederations. FIFA gave each area a specific number of spots, with UEFA (read: Europe) getting 12 teams in the field. CONCACAF, which is what we know here in North America, got four spots. In addition to Inter Miami, the Seattle Sounders FC and LA FC of the MLS qualified.

Typically, the winner of a country’s top national league (in this case, the MLS) would automatically get a spot, but the LA Galaxy, winner of the 2024 MLS Cup, were bypassed in favor of Inter Miami and Messi. FIFA officials said it was because Inter Miami won the Supporters Shield for best record in the MLS regular season. But we all know it’s because Messi equals tickets.

The format is the same as the regular World Cup, with eight groups of four, with teams in each group playing once. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stage. The final is at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Since this is pretty much a home game for Inter Miami, the oddsmakers favor the Herons slightly. Inter Miami currently ranks third in the Eastern Conference of the MLS with 29 points in 16 matches. The 37-year-old Messi has five goals and three assists in his last three MLS appearances.

Al Ahly is the Boston Celtics of Egyptian soccer. They play in the Egyptian Premier League in the CAF (Confederation of African Football) and have won 12 CAF Champions League titles. They’re known as the Red Devils or Red Giants and are the most valuable club in Africa.

This will be the debut for coach Jose Riveiro, who just signed a contract on May 29. Al Ahly fired coach Marcel Koller after a 1-1 draw in the African Champions League, which eliminated his team from contention in that event. Koller had incredible success with the club (three Premier League titles, four Egyptian Super Cups), but they don’t mess around.

I’m taking the Red Giants from Egypt on the moneyline. They will be looking to prove something after losing the African Champions League, and they won’t be intimidated by the pro-Messi crowd.

The Red Giants are led by striker Wessam Abou Ali, who has 28 goals in 35 appearances with the team and Egyptian National team star Eman Ashour. Don’t forget how teams usually perk up when a new coach comes in.

Inter Miami has not been a top side in MLS and are fortunate just to be involved in this event. Messi still does Messi things, he has five goals and three assists in his last three MLS games, but the Herons’ defense could be missing injured stars Jordi Alba and Gonzalo Lujan and starting keeper Drake Callender (sports hernia surgery in May). The best team in Egypt is better than a middle-of-the-pack MLS side.
