It’s first-versus-worst in Group D on Tuesday, when group-leading Flamengo (2-0-0, 6 points, +4 GD) meet Los Angeles FC (0-0-2, 0 points, -3 GD) at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, FL, at 9:00 pm ET on Tuesday night.

Motivation could be lacking as Los Angeles FC cannot progress, and Flamengo are already guaranteed a spot in the knockout stage. The Brazilian side is also guaranteed top spot in the Group unless they lose on Tuesday and there is at least a five-goal swing in goal differential in the Chelseas/Esperance Tunis match.

The LAFC vs Flamengo odds favor the Brazilians fairly heavily.

Flamengo is priced at -125 on the moneyline (but, curiously, is -120 to cover the spread as 0.5-goal favorites, which is functionally the same wager). Los Angeles FC is a +350 longshot to win while the draw pays out at +250. In terms of implied win probability, the odds give Flamengo a 55.56% chance, LAFC a 22.22% chance, and the draw a 28.57% chance. Adding all three, we get a 106.35% overround, a little higher than I’d like to see, but c’est la vie.

Group D Table

Unlike LAFC/Flamengo, there’s everything to play for in the other Group D match between Chelsea and Esperance Tunis. Chelsea only needs a draw to advance, while the Tunisians will progress to the knockout stage with a victory and only a victory. That match kicks off at the same time (9:00 pm ET) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA.

LAFC vs Flamengo Picks & Score Prediction

• Picks: Flamengo clean sheet (+135), under 2.5 goals (-120)

Flamengo has been the class of Serie A all season, and they’ve carried that form into the Club World Cup. Mengão has lost just once in domestic play and has a league-best +20 goal differential through 11 matches, a whopping 11 goals better than any other team. Defense is their calling card; they have only conceded four times in their first 11 domestic matches, and just once in the CWC during a 3-1 win over Chelsea as sizable underdogs. (Flamengo was +275 on the three-way moneyline, compared to Chelsea at +110).

Holding prolific Chelsea to 48% possession, one goal, and 1.06 xGF (while generated 3.00 xGF themselves) was no small feat. Chelsea controlled 65% of possession in a 2-0 win over LAFC and generated 2.24 xGF against just 0.85 for Los Angeles.

LAFC, meanwhile, is in the midst of a relatively disappointing MLS campaign, sitting fifth in the Western Conference (7-5-4, 26 points, +7 goal differential) after 16 matches. They won the West last year and in 2022, while finishing third in 2023. The Olivier Giroud experiment continues to pay modest dividends; after failing to score in 14 matches last season, he has three in ten matches this year. The 38-year-old has certainly looked his age on most nights.

Unless we get an unmotivated version of Flamengo, or they decide to rest starters in advance of the knockout stage, they should outclass an LAFC team that’s struggling to keep up on the international stage.

The goalscorer odds don’t suggest that Flamengo will field a B-team of sorts, and they do still need at least a point to guarantee first place in the group. (There’s a very real chance that Chelsea record a lopsided victory over the Tunisian side.)

At the end of the day, I am backing Flamengo’s unbelievable defense to keep stifling LAFC’s frustrated attack. I am betting a Flamengo clean sheet at +135, along with under 2.5 goals at -120.
