Coming off one of his worst starts of the season – and an ugly appearance in the All-Star Game – reigning AL Cy Young-winner Tarik Skubal will take the mound for the Detroit Tigers (59-40, 27-22 away, O/U) on Sunday Night Baseball as his team looks to stem a six-game losing streak against Jacob Latz and the Texas Rangers (50-49, 28-19 home, O/U).
Skubal threw 19 pitches in one inning of work in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, but is otherwise pitching on nine days’ rest. With their ace on the bump, the Tigers are sizable favorites in Sunday’s MLB odds.

Detroit Tigers vs Texas Rangers Odds
There isn’t a ton of variety in the Tigers/Rangers odds at this point. The Detroit moneyline ranges from -188 to -183, with BetMGM currently offering the longest price. The Texas moneyline is as short as +150 and as long as +158 (at Caesars and FanDuel). The run total is 7.0 across the board, but over bettors can find the best price (-109) at DraftKings, while under bettors can find the best price (-106) at FanDuel.

Texas won the first two games of the series on the back of stellar pitching, taking a 2-0 win on Friday and a 4-1 victory on Saturday.
Despite their current skid, the Tigers still have the best World Series odds among American League teams, as short as +650 at BetMGM and Caesars. Two-and-a-half games out of a Wild Card spot entering play on Sunday, the Rangers are +6100 longshots, on average.
Skubal vs Latz Starting Pitcher Matchup
Nathan Eovaldi, the de facto ace of the Texas staff, was supposed to start this game for the Rangers but was scratched due to back tightness. That’s a huge blow for the Rangers; if Eovaldi had enough innings to qualify (he’s currently eight innings short), he’d lead the entire majors in ERA, and it wouldn’t be particularly close. Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes currently holds that honor with a 2.01 ERA, almost a half-run higher than Eovaldi’s 1.58 mark.
Instead, Bruce Bochy will hand the ball to 29-year-old lefty Jacob Latz, who usually works out of the pen. This will be Latz’s third start of the season; in his most-recent on Jun 24th, he pitched six solid innings against the Orioles, allowing just two runs on one hit and three walks with four Ks, and throwing a career-high 88 pitches.
Tarik Skubal remains the favorite to repeat in the 2025 Cy Young odds but he hasn’t been as dominant lately. He’s allowed four earned runs in two of his last four starts, something that’s only happened one other time this year. The Texas hitters on the whole have solid career numbers against Skubal, but that didn’t translate to success the first time they faced him this season. Back on May 9th, Skubal fanned 12 over 7.0 innings in a 2-1 Tigers win over the Rangers in Detroit. In two starts against Texas last year, Skubal allowed three runs on 12 hits and three walks over 12.1 innings with 12 strikeouts.
Rangers Batters vs Tarik Skubal H2H History
The Rangers actually have a solid history against the Detroit ace. In 76 combined at-bats, they’ve managed a .276 average and .811 OPS with eight extra-base hits, including three home runs. Jonah Heim, Kyle Higashioka, and Marcus Semien have each taken Skubal yard once. Corey Seager is an impressive 6-for-9 against Skubal with one double and zero strikeouts.
Tigers Batters vs Jacob Latz H2H History
Altogether, the Tigers only have six total at-bats against Lutz, spread out over five players. Matt Vierling is the only Detroit hitter who’s faced Latz more than once, going 1-for-2 with a single and a strikeout. No one on the Tigers has an extra-base hit off the lefty so far.
Tigers vs Rangers Picks
- Rangers moneyline (+158) at Caesars
- Seager over 0.5 hits (-210) at FanDuel
- Under 7.0 runs (-106) at FanDuel
Oddsmakers are undervaluing Texas on Sunday. Detroit’s offense vastly overperformed compared to expectations prior to the All-Star break. They made the postseason last year while sitting in the bottom-half of the league in runs scored. They’re fourth in runs scored so far this season without a ton of difference in year-of-year personnel. I expect the regression to continue on Sunday night and I like the value on the Texas moneyline at +158.
I have very few bad things to say about Skubal, and he was downright dominant against Texas earlier this season, but he’s been much less than perfect over the last three weeks, which includes an ugly appearance in the All-Star Game earlier this week. The Ranger batters have had enough past success against the reigning Cy Young-winner to give me a modicum of confidence they’ll get to Skubal for a run or two.
