LAC vs DET Betting Lines
The Chargers vs Lions odds have been bouncing around for the last 48 hours. The Lions opened as slim one-point favorites and then were bet up to -2.0 before the line came back down as far as -0.5 as of Thursday morning. Detroit is still favored by 1.5 at bet365, which is the best ATS price Chargers bettors can currently find. On the moneyline, Chargers bettors can get +105 at Caesars, bet365, or BetMGM. Lions moneyline bettors can find the best price (-120) at FanDuel.
The total has seen the most change since the odds opened. The O/U was just 32.5 at the outset, but is now as high as 34.0 in Thursday’s NFL odds.
Los Angeles Chargers vs Detroit Lions Picks & Predictions
The Chargers were only 1-2 straight-up in preseason last year, their first with Jim Harbaugh on the sideline. But overall, Harbaugh has been an excellent bet in preseason action. He hasn’t been quite as good as his brother John, who’s an absurd 44-17 SU during his tenure with Baltimore, but Jim is still a profitable 11-8 during his time with the Niners and Chargers.
Dan Campbell, on the other hand, is just 5-7 SU as a head coach in the preseason, all with the Lions.
The Chargers also had a stronger, and more plentiful, draft class this year. Their eight selections (six in the first five rounds) were given an A- by NFL.com. Detroit’s seven picks (only four in the first five rounds) were given a B grade. Fans are likely to get their first taste of LAC running back Omarion Hampton, the #22 pick and second RB off the board (after Ashton Jeanty), tonight. Detroit’s first two picks, DT Tyleik Williams and G Tate Ratledge, are sitting out tonight’s game.
If starters were playing, the Lions would be sizable favorites and undoubtedly more talented. As it is, the Chargers are likely to have better players on the field, overall, and Harbaugh has a better track record as a preseason coach. I would have the Chargers favored if I was setting the line and I love the value on the LAC moneyline at +105.
I’m also betting the under which – as mentioned – has been bet up from 32.5 to 34.0. LAC’s first two preseason games last year averaged just 20.5 PPG. Detroit’s first preseason game of 2024 featured just 17 points (though they’re second and third both went over 40). I don’t expect much from the offenses tonight in everyone’s first competitive action in months.
I don’t mind whatsoever that the under is a massive fade of the public. The NFL public betting splits on Thursday morning showed a staggering 85% of O/U handle and 84% of O/U wagers on the over.
