  • Week 3 of the college football season is here and we’re letting you know the top underdog picks for today
  • Georgia Tech has struggled to get by Clemson in years past, while Florida and LSU always seem to play crazy games
  • Check out my upset predictions and picks for Week 3 in college football today (Sept. 13)

It’s not the greatest slate of college football match-ups for Week 3 on paper, and that usually means things are going to get wild.

Last week we saw big upsets with Army taking down Kansas State and Mississippi State shocking Arizona State on a late touchdown. Here are our teams on Upset Alert in Week 3.

I’ve got four games on Saturday that have my attention for an upset, or at least a game where the spread is calling. Below are my upset picks for Week 3. All odds are as of Sept. 13.

CFB Upset Pick: Clemson at Georgia Tech +3.5 (-120 at Bet365)

Two games in and you’ll see my theme for these upset picks is basically, “are we sure the favorite is any good?” I’m not sold on Clemson at all. Tigers QB Cade Klubnik has only averaged 213 yards a game through the air and no outside playmakers have developed for Clemson.

Georgia Tech QB Haynes King is a Go after missing last week’s game against Gardner-Webb with an injury, but my instinct is they held King out for this one.

Georgia Tech has lost nine in a row to Clemson, and only one has been close. The Yellow Jackets have failed to cover the spread in each of its last six games against teams from South Carolina. But it’s time, Georgia Tech will give Clemson fits.

CFB Upset Pick: South Alabama +24.5 (-105 at FanDuel) at No. 24 Auburn

Same thought as above, Auburn is getting a ton of points here and is suddenly ranked, but are we sure the Tigers are really that good after beating 1-1 Baylor and 0-2 Ball State? I mean, Ball State has scored three points all season.

The good news for Auburn is QB Jackson Arnold looks solid after coming over from Oklahoma, but this is still an Auburn team that was 5-7 last year with some holes.

South Alabama has some weapons on offense. Devin Voisin had 152 yards receiving and two touchdowns in a 33-31 loss to Tulane (a game the Jaguars could have won, they missed a two-point play in the final minute).

South Alabama has failed to cover the spread in its last seven games against fellow Alabama schools, but I don’t think Auburn has the firepower to make this a blowout.

CFB Upset Pick: Old Dominion +5.5 (-108 at DraftKings) at Va Tech

The other upset theory I use is find a team that is clearly sinking and the coach is in trouble.

I give you Virginia Tech. The Hokies are 0-2 and have been outscored 48-3 in the second half of their two losses. Coach Brent Pry’s seat is hot. He’s just 16-23 since taking over. Seriously, if he loses this, there might be a meeting in the end zone with the AD after the game.

Va. Tech has failed to cover the spread in eight of its last nine games against non-conference teams. Old Dominion beat the Hokies in Pry’s first game. Not a good omen. ODU QB Colton Joseph has run for 228 yards on 22 carries this season.

If Old Dominion puts any pressure on the Hokies, I think they collapse.

CFB Upset Pick: Florida +7.5 (-122 at FanDuel) over LSU

This SEC series has been crazy the last few years. Florida easily handled LSU 27-16 last year, but everyone is down on Florida after the loss to South Florida last week.

But are we sure LSU is that good? The Tigers beat Clemson, but looked lethargic against Louisiana Tech, winning 23-7. LSU has failed to cover the spread in seven of its last eight games in September. LSU has yet to show it can run the ball with any consistency.

Florida seems to be the type of program now that only responds with its backs against the wall. Gators QB DJ Lagway is so talented and this will be his type of game to use his legs against an undisciplined LSU defense.
