After years of being the laughing stock of the NFL, it looks like there’s finally adults in the room for the Raiders. Pete Carroll gives them stability and experience as the man in charge, while Geno Smith provides above average QB play, something Las Vegas hasn’t seen in a long time.

Smith was excellent in his season debut, throwing for 362 yards and a TD versus the Patriots. He was 4-of-5 on throws 20+ yards downfield, while the Raiders posted an explosive play rate of 14.5%, the third best mark in Week 1. 70% of Geno’s throws went for either a first down or a TD, which was the highest mark of any QB.

Brock Bowers did the bulk of the pass catching damage, and despite missing practice with a knee injury during the week, is expected to play.

The favorite in the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds, Ashton Jeanty looked good in his season debut, and should get plenty of run tonight. Don’t be fooled by the Chargers’ impressive run defense numbers from Week 1, as they faced the anemic Chiefs rushing attack.

Defensively, Maxx Crosby anchors a unit that if nothing else, can still rush the QB. The Raiders ranked third in pressure rate in Week 1, and second in QB knockdown percentage.

As for the Chargers offense, we should get a good feel for whether or not this is the year that Justin Herbert finally takes the leap. Herbert was phenomenal in LA’s season debut, torching KC for 318 yards and 3 touchdowns. That performance shrunk the Super Bowl 60 odds for Jim Harbaugh’s crew, but I’m not buying them as a serious contender just yet.

Herbert might have to put on his cape again tonight, as the Chargers run game looked lifeless in Week 1. Rookie RB Omarion Hampton failed to gain positive yards on 33% of his carries, and averaged just 0.6 yards before contact. Las Vegas’ run defense was stout in their debut, yielding just 3.5 yards per attempt.

I’m predicting the Raiders defense can get enough pressure to bother Hebert, and bottle up Hampton. Offensively, the Las Vegas attack is much more explosive than the Chiefs, and can produce enough points to keep this game close. I’ll take +3.5 in my Raiders vs Chargers predictions, a pick the trends certainly support.

Dating back to 2003, home division underdogs between 3 and 6 points are covering at a 59% clip in Week 2. Over the last five seasons, home divisional dogs of at least 3.5 points are 12-5-1 against the spread, including the Browns cover versus Cincy last week.

There are trends to support LA as well, like the fact they’re 6-1 ATS in their last seven games as road favorites. The lone loss came in the last instance, when they were dominated in last season’s Wild Card Round in Houston.

Per the NFL public betting percentages, only 11% of the moneyline tickets are on Las Vegas to pull off the upset. Most of the 89% of tickets on the Chargers moneyline are likely tied up in parlays, meaning the Raiders can break a lot of hearts tonight, while making the sportsbooks a ton of money.
