Capitals vs Rangers Prediction, Odds & Ovechkin Goal Props (Oct. 12)

Alex Ovechkin’s quest for goal #900 of his NHL career continues tonight at Madison Square Garden when the Washington Capitals (1-1; 1-1 ATS) take on the New York Rangers (2-1; 2-1 ATS) at 7:30 pm ET in the only NHL game of the night.

It’s the second game of a back-to-back for each team. Both are coming off victories. The Rangers trounced Pittsburgh 6-1 Saturday night while the Caps decked the Islanders 4-2. Ovechkin had an assist in the Caps win, his first point of the season.

Ovechkin Anytime Goalscorer (+150 at DraftKings)

Ovechkin is three goals away from becoming the first NHL player with 900 career goals. He’s yet to score in the Caps first two games this season, he did have an assist last night. Ovechkin has an amazing streak of scoring at least one goal in each of his last 10 appearances in a back-to-back.

Ovechkin Two Goals (+850 at DraftKings) & Hat Trick (+4000 at DraftKings)

A hat trick tonight for The Great Eight would be a tremendous accomplishment, obviously. Against the Rangers in his career, Ovechkin has scored 46 goals, the fifth-most of any opponent.

There might be some sneaky value here with the back-to-back, because even though they’re the road team tonight, the Caps are the team that didn’t fly last night. They played the Islanders and then stayed in New York, while the Rangers had to fly back from Pittsburgh last night.

It’s still early, obviously, Washington is 1-1 against the spread, the Rangers are 2-1. The moneyline on both teams everywhere is -110.

You can get 5.5 as the total at DraftKings which is where I would go. The total is 6.0 at BetMGM. Washington swept the season series last year, three of the last four meetings have all hit the over.

Capitals vs Rangers Prediction

• Capitals +1.5 (-220 at DraftKings)

I’m all in on the Capitals tonight. New York has failed to cover the puck line in nine of its last 10 games at MSG and are still finding their way under new coach Mike Sullivan.

New York is in total transition mode after missing the playoffs last season and trading away mainstays Kaapo Kakko, Filip Chytil and Chris Kreider. Offensively, New York has scored 10 goals in the first three games. Veteran D Adam Fox had two goals and an assist in the win over the Penguins.

Defense is where the Rangers have to improve. Last season, goalie Igor Shesterkin faced the most shots of any goalie.

Washington is largely running it back after finishing with the most points in the East last season and scoring the second most goals in the league (286). They got bounced in the conference semis by Carolina.

Ovi still gets the headlines, but Aliaksei Protas might be the Caps best player and goalie Logan Thompson is coming off a big year. The Caps are the better team. Grab them on the road.
