UTEP (1-5; 2-4 ATS) takes on Sam Houston (0-6; 1-5 ATS) at Shell Energy Stadium – the home of the Houston Dynamo of MLS – tonight at 7 p.m. in CUSA mid-week college football.

The Miners lead the all-time series 3-1 and are slight favorites at this neutral-site contest. UTEP has lost four in a row, while Sam Houston has been blown out five times in its six games, but is coming off a two-point loss to Jacksonville State.

UTEP has the conference’s best defense, allowing 350 yards per game, and Udoka Ezeani leads the team with four sacks. UTEP is coming off a 19-8 loss to Liberty on Thursday, Oct. 8. USC/Boise State transfer Malachi Nelson has thrown for 1,163 yards this season, but also nine picks.

Still, I think UTEP has no problem stopping the Sam Houston offense, which ranks 131 in the nation (out of 136), averaging just 277 yards a game.

Sam Houston had the dream season last season, finishing 10-3 and winning the New Orleans Bowl, but you know what happens: everyone transfers out. Coach K.C. Keeler left for Temple. The school brought in former Ole Miss OC Phil Longo.

And it’s all been a mess for the Bearkats. They’ve only led for 19:42 out of 360 total minutes this season. Senior QB Hunter Watson leads the team in passing with 754 yards and rushing with 208.

Watson is coming off his best game of the season when he threw for 222 yards and three scores in a close loss to Jacksonville State, but even last year, when Sam Houston was good, he only went over 175 four times (out of 12 games).

I see a defensive game no matter what. I looked for some FG props with no luck, but I believe that with UTEP’s defense, Watson struggles to throw the ball tonight.

The Bearkats have lost games this season by 27, 55 and 17 points three different times. If there was a true ranking of the worst teams in college football, well, Sam Houston would be around the bottom.
