College Football Picks Today: Best Bets for Week 9 (Oct. 25)

• Another Saturday is upon us, which means we’re blessed with another College Football slate on Saturday, October 25
• I’m thinking we can go right back to the quarterbacks this week since it worked so well last week

We split again last Saturday, but since both bets were of the plus-money variety, we stuffed a little cash in our pockets. That’s all we’re ever looking to do. Still, it’s a new week, so obviously we have more work to do.

I’m thinking since we went with two quarterbacks last week, we should do the same thing this week. It just makes sense. Once again, we’re looking at quarterbacks playing against elite run defenses.

There are no shortages of elite run defenses in College Football, so these matchups are easy to spot. In fact, it took me forever to narrow down the list of candidates to just two. Lucky for us, I did, and now we all have two College Football bets for Saturday that we can all be proud of. What a world.

Week 9 College Football Pick #1 – Blake Shapen Bounces Back

I don’t want to call these kids “bad” quarterbacks, but that is definitely implied by what the sportsbooks set as their passing yard totals. If your total is set at 210 and it’s priced at even money, the books are saying you’re a bad quarterback. And after the interception, Blake Shapen threw to Florida’s nose tackle last week, many fans would agree he’s a “bad” quarterback.

Still, he’s a competitor, and he had something to say this week to all the people who think he stinks.

Here’s the thing we have to do as sports bettors: buy low. In the stock game, it means to buy when everyone else is selling. Distressed assets can be the best kind, and damn it, Blake Shapen is a distressed asset right now.

But here’s the thing the haters won’t tell you. Last week, before the horrific interception, this kid threw for 324 yards, and he did it against a pretty good Florida defense in a hostile environment. That’s a hell of an accomplishment. A 300-burger is something “bad” quarterbacks don’t do very much.

This week, Blake is in a similar spot as the Mississippi State Bulldogs are hosting the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns boast a very good defense that excels at stopping the run. But what teams have been doing is just throwing the ball. Why run into a brick wall all the time? These guys have given up 200+ passing yards in each of their last three games. I’m thinking Blake gets right on them Saturday. Feels easy.

Week 9 College Football Pick #2 – Aidan Chiles Isn’t That Bad

The books seem to get a kick out of disrespecting these quarterbacks, and it’s really showing with the line they hung on Aidan Chiles. I get that they may not understand these kids, but that’s no excuse to outright disrespect them. The only thing we can really do about it is make them pay for it by putting our cash on Aidan Chiles tonight.

I mean, look at this spider chart for crying out loud. (Full disclosure: I’m not 100% sure what we’re looking at here, but I’m pretty sure it’s good for Aidan and us by extension.)

Here’s the deal: This is the Super Bowl for Michigan State. It really is. They’re hosting Michigan, whom they hate. Think of something you hate. Michigan State hates Michigan way more than that. It’s bad. Real bad.

Any time we see hate like this, we have to at least check to see if that hate is matched with talent. I think it is. Over his last six games, our boy Aiden has thrown for 212+ yards in four of those games. Now, he did have two stinkers in those six games where he failed to crack 100 passing yards, but it is what it is. He’s coming off a game against Indiana where he threw for 243 yards, so there is that.

Michigan’s defense is another stiff test. That much we know, but I bet they force Michigan State into throwing the ball early. Nobody can seem to run on these guys, so an aerial assault should be in order. Three of the last four quarterbacks they’ve seen have all gone 200+ on them. Aidan can do it too. Feels easy.
