The stakes are high in Italy today at the ATP Finals. #3 Alexander Zverev takes on #8 Felix Auger-Aliassime, with the winner advancing to the semifinals. Both men are 1-1 through their first two round robin matches, with each player beating American Ben Shelton, and losing to Jannik Sinner in straight sets.

The winner of this match will face world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, so in all likelihood, this will be their last competitive action of the 2025 season.

I’m anticipating a close, hard fought battle, which is why I’m predicting a three-setter in my Zverev vs Auger-Aliassime picks.

The Canadian is coming off a three-set match versus Shelton, in which he rallied from a set down to stave off elimination. Auger-Aliassime is having a career resurgence in 2025, capturing three titles and winning 49 matches after a down 2024.

He entered this tournament in some of the best form of his career, reaching the final in two of his last three events. Each of those tournaments were on hardcourt, and the one event where he fell short of the final two was the result of an injury. He also made a deep run at the US Open reaching the final four, beating Zverev along the way.

Indoor hardcourt is arguably Auger-Aliassime’s best surface. He boasts an 83.3 percent win rate on indoor hardcourts this season, claiming two trophies. His career win rate indoors hovers round 70 percent, with seven of his eight titles coming under a roof.

His serve and forehand combination is a menace to deal with on the fast surface, and he’ll look to dictate points on his serve with that one-two punch. He’s had plenty of success versus Zverev in the past, with the majority of the hardcourt matches needing a third and deciding set.

Zverev meanwhile, has flashed great form recently as well. His previous two tournaments resulted in semifinal and runner up finishes, falling to the great Sinner at both events. He was dominant over Shelton to begin the round robin, and has dropped only three sets in his last eight matches against opponents not named Sinner.

Like Auger-Aliassime, Zverev’s serve is his bread and butter. He grades out as a top-seven server on tour, while no player wins more of their first serve points than Zverev.

As for the return game, it’s the weakest part of both players games. That’s a major reason I like this match to go the distance, as we should see few breaks of either man’s serve.
