  • Canada leads Olympic men’s hockey odds at +115, with USA close behind at +175
  • Sweden at +650 is my pick to provide value, with elite defense and goaltending built for tournament play

NHL players are back at the Olympics for the first time in 12 years, and the men’s hockey tournament kicks off Wednesday in Milan. Canada and USA are heavy favorites, but the odds have shifted since rosters were announced in January. A couple late injuries and roster swaps have shaken things up heading into opening night.

I’ll break down the updated odds, the full tournament schedule, and where I’m putting my money in the NHL odds.

Canada’s odds have shortened from +135 in early January to +115 at DraftKings. That’s a noticeable move, driven by public money flooding in on the Canadians. The odds of Canada and the U.S. meeting in the gold medal game sit at +141, implying roughly a 41.5% chance of a rematch of the 2010 Vancouver final.

Per ESPN, DraftKings and BetMGM report upward of 95% of money backing Canada and the U.S. combined. Caesars noted that early sharp action widened Canada’s gap over the Americans on the board.

BetMGM’s trading manager said his book would welcome bets on Sweden, Finland and Czechia, which tells you how lopsided the action has been.

Canada is a -500 favorite to beat Czechia in its opener Thursday, while the U.S. opens as a ridiculous -2400 against Latvia. Group C is a cakewalk for the Americans, with Germany the only team that could put up a fight thanks to Leon Draisaitl.

Group B is the one to watch. Finland and Sweden meet on Feb. 13, and that game could decide who gets the easier path in the knockout rounds. Canada is -425 to win Group A, while the U.S. is -1000 to take Group C.

Odds Movement and Roster Updates

Canada’s odds have moved from +135 in early January down to +115 at DraftKings. Sharp money has come in on the Canadians too, per Caesars, widening the gap over the Americans on the board.

A couple late roster changes are worth noting. Brayden Point is out with a knee injury and has been replaced by Seth Jarvis. Anthony Cirelli suffered a lower-body injury during the Stadium Series and was swapped for Sam Bennett. I actually don’t mind that move for Canada. Bennett won the Conn Smythe last year and was on Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster. He saves his best for the big stage.

On the U.S. side, Seth Jones was replaced by Jackson LaCombe after an injury. Finland lost Aleksander Barkov to ACL and MCL injuries earlier this season, which was devastating, and also swapped Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for Joonas Korpisalo in net. Czechia will be without Pavel Zacha due to an ankle injury, which hurts their center depth.

Mens’ Olympic Hockey Picks and Predictions

Canada deserves to be favored. McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby and Makar on the same roster is just unfair. MacKinnon won MVP at the 4 Nations Face-Off after leading all scorers with four goals, and that squad beat USA in overtime on a McDavid goal.

But +115 isn’t a price I’m willing to pay. Jordan Binnington has posted an .864 save percentage in 32 NHL games this season. He was fantastic at 4 Nations, making 31 saves in the final, but banking on a goalie with those regular season numbers to carry a two-week tournament is a tough ask.

Logan Thompson has been excellent with Washington this season (.912 SV%), good enough to earn +2500 MVP odds. But he’s untested on the international stage, and Darcy Kuemper likely only plays if things go sideways.

USA at +175 has the best goaltender in the tournament in Connor Hellebuyck. Auston Matthews captains this squad, and the Tkachuk brothers, Jack Eichel, Quinn Hughes and Zach Werenski make this a well-rounded roster top to bottom.

My issue with USA is that they couldn’t close at 4 Nations. They dominated the group stage but blew a 2-1 lead in the final. The forward group needs to be better, and leaving Jason Robertson off the roster despite leading all American players in goals is a head-scratcher.

I’m sticking with Sweden at +650. I liked them at +550 last month, and the price has gotten better. Victor Hedman captains a blueline that includes three-time Norris winner Erik Karlsson, Rasmus Dahlin and Cup champion Gustav Forsling. That group is built for playoff-style hockey.

Filip Gustavsson has posted a 2.48 GAA and .912 save percentage this season, and Jesper Wallstedt owns a .958 save percentage in his young career. One hot goalie can win you gold in this format, just like Lundqvist did for Sweden in 2006.

William Nylander, Filip Forsberg, Jesper Bratt and Lucas Raymond give them enough offense, and Gabriel Landeskog’s return adds a physical element they lacked at 4 Nations. The market has Sweden as a distant third. I think the gap is much smaller than +650 implies.

Filip Gustavsson (SWE)+4000
William Nylander (SWE)+4000

McDavid leads the NHL with 96 points and has been waiting for this moment since he turned pro 11 years ago. He’s the favorite for good reason. But if you’re betting Sweden to medal, Gustavsson at +4000 is worth a look. A hot goalie winning gold for an underdog is exactly how tournament MVPs happen.

Celebrini at +1600 is a fun longshot. The 19-year-old has been practicing on Canada’s top line with McDavid, and he’s +2500 to lead the tournament in goals. Hellebuyck at +2500 is my other favorite if you’re backing USA to win it all.
