The NFL Combine, aka the underwear Olympics begins Thursday in Indianapolis, with all eyes on the 40-yard dash. The sprint is typically the most talked about portion of the event, and online sportsbooks have released markets allowing us to bet on whether the current record will fall, and if anyone will post a sub 4.265 score.
A blazing fast 40 can instantly vault a player up the Draft Board, as we’ve seen speedsters like John Ross, Henry Ruggs and Xavier Worthy, among others, parlay their 40-yard dash success into a much better draft position.
Here are the NFL Combine odds, along with my 40-yard dash picks and best bets.
NFL Combine 40-Yard Dash Picks
- Will Anyone Break the 40-Yard Dash Record – Yes (+450 at DraftKings)
Back in 2008, Chris Johnson shocked the football by world by running a 4.24 40-yard dash. That number stood for nine years before Ross stepped onto the stage, sprinting to a 4.22 finish. Ross’ mark seemed unlikely to fall in the near future, but it took only seven years before Worthy bested it with a ridiculous 4.21 score.
NFL Combine Odds – Will Anyone Break the 40-Yard Dash Record
The odds drastically favor the record standing at -700, but we have two legit candidates this year who have a realistic shot of setting a new mark.

Let’s start with Mississippi State wide receiver Brenen Thompson. He was a high school sprinter who won a state title with a 21.27 time in the 200 meter, and was clocked at 10.4 in the 100 meter. He was running a 4.3 40-yard dash in high school, and was tracked at 23.7 miles per hour in the offseason.
The Senior Bowl director predicts he’ll be in the low to mid 4.2 second range, with upside to best Worthy’s current record.
Sticking with wideouts, Alabama corner Domani Jackson already has a 4.21 40 time under his belt, clocking the mark as a high schooler. Sure, there’s always the potential he got a favorable clocking from whoever timed it, or that it was wind aided, but speed is speed and this guy has plenty of it.
Jackson tied the Alabama state record with a 10.25 100-meter dash in high school, the fastest time of any player in this year’s class.
At +450, we’re getting an implied probability of 18.18 percent that someone breaks Worthy’s Combine record. Considering we have two clear candidates, and a couple darkhorses below, I’ll gladly take that bet.
NFL Combine Best Bets
- Fastest 40-Yard Dash Time – Faster than 4.265 Seconds (-115 at DraftKings)
Obviously if I like Thompson and/or Jackson to threaten the 40-yard dash record, than I should also be betting that someone will run faster than 4.256 seconds.
NFL Combine Odds – Fastest 40-Yard Dash Time
Thompson and Jackson are the most likely candidates, but they’re certainly not the only ones. LSU wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. is also on the list, as is Georgia wideout Zachariah Branch.
Hilton Jr. is built exactly like Xavier Worthy and was clocked at 22.13 mph during Shrine Bowl practice. The director of that event is quoted as saying he’ll run sub 4.3, making him another contender to help us cash this bet.
Branch meanwhile, was the state of Nevada’s track and field athlete of the year as a high school sophomore, running a 10.33 100-meter dash. He also ran track at USC before transferring to the Bulldogs, and his speed helped him create enough separation to lead the SEC in receptions last season.
Last but not least, Hilton Jr.’s LSU teammate Barlon Brown can also fly, winning Tennessee high school championships in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, clocking a 10.49 time in the 100.
He reached 22.6 mph on a 100-yard kick return while at Kentucky, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he breaks the 4.265 40-yard dash mark at the Combine.
