For the Toronto Maple Leafs, April 15th can come soon enough. That night marks the last game on Toronto’s schedule, and the Leafs are counting down the days until they can put an end to their miserable season. Toronto has dropped 9 of 10 overall heading into Minnesota tonight, where they’re significant underdogs to the Wild in the latest NHL odds.
Minnesota on the other hand, is one of the premier teams in the West, but is looking to shake off a two-game losing streak. The Wild hammered the Leafs 6-3 in their first meeting, and Toronto’s recent form suggests a repeat performance is likely.
Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm ET from the Grand Casino Arena, in Saint Paul, MN, with TNT, truTV and HBO Max providing the broadcast coverage.

Minnesota enters play tonight with the seventh shortest price in the Stanley Cup odds. Despite their position near the top, they sit third in the Central Division, the most competitive division in hockey.
The Wild are far from the league’s most potent scoring team, but they do feature a pair of 38-goal scorers in Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov. The dynamic duo are responsible for most of Minnesota’s offensive damage, with supplementary scoring up front provided by Joel Eriksson Ek.
The blue line is one of the best in hockey, led by Quinn Hughes and Brock Faber. The Olympians have 44 and 43 points a piece, but the rest of the defense excels at keeping the puck out of the net. Minnesota has allowed the eighth fewest goals in the NHL at even strength, and rarely play shorthanded taking the third fewest penalties.
That’s a stark contrast from Toronto, who have been the worst team in the NHL since the Olympic Break. The Leafs rank 30th in goals for over their last 10 contests, and dead last in goals against.
TOR vs MIN: Stats 5-on-5 Since Feb. 25
Things won’t get any easier tonight versus the defensively sound Wild, especially without Auston Matthews. Toronto’s captain is done for the season following a vicious knee from Radko Gudas, leaving the Leafs roster with just two 20+ goal scorers (William Nylander and John Tavares).
Defensively, Toronto has been a mess for a while, and their sloppy play in their own end is impossible to ignore. The Leafs have allowed 128 high danger scoring chances since Feb. 25th, 44 more than Minnesota over the same time frame.
The Wild may be slumping, but a date with Toronto is exactly what the doctor ordered. I’ll gladly take Minnesota to beat this putrid Maple Leafs team by multiple goals, a feat the Wild have accomplished in each of their past four victories.
Leafs vs Wild Picks
- Matt Boldy Anytime Goal (+130 at Bet365)
Switching over to the NHL props, where I’m betting on Boldy to light the lamp. The Wild star leads the team in shooting percentage (18%), and ranks only behind Kaprizov in shots and ice time among forwards.
Boldy was instrumental in team USA’s gold medal win at the Olympics, and enters play with goals in three straight. He should have plenty of opportunity to find the back of the net tonight, as Toronto has surrendered 280 scoring chances in their last 10 games.
Leafs vs Wild Starting Lineups
Outside of the Matthews injury, there’s not much to report from either the Maples Leafs or the Wild starting lineups. As for the play in net, Anthony Stolarz will face Jesper Wallstedt, with the ladder posting some fine numbers.
Anthony Stolarz vs Jesper Wallstedt Stats
Wallstedt ranks fifth in the NHL in save percentage and third in shutouts. He’s allowed just two goals in back to back starts, recording a save percentage north of .925 in both outings.
Stolarz meanwhile, has dropped four straight starts, surrendering 4 goals or more twice. He’s won only once since November 5th, and another victory tonight is highly unlikely.
