  • BetMGM will begin a phase out of credit card account funding starting March 31
  • Starting March 31, BetMGM will prohibit any new credit cards from being linked to gaming accounts
  • Credit card usage to fund accounts will be gradually phased out after the date

BetMGM has reported it will begin a gradual phase out of credit card account funding at the end of this month.

Speaking at a Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board meeting on Wednesday, March 25, BetMGM Chief Compliance Officer Rhea Loney reported the company will no longer allow new credit cards to be linked to accounts beginning Tuesday, March 31.

The company will then begin a gradual phase out of all credit card account funding on its platforms after that date.

BetMGM Latest to Prohibit Credit Cards

Loney announced the new BetMGM policy during a public meeting of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Loney and Joseph Caputi, senior legal counsel for BetMGM, represented the company during the meeting, in which the board doled out a $100,000 fine for BetMGM’s failure to have sufficient know-your-customer protocols in place to prevent fraud.

PGCB Chair Denise J. Smiley asked the BetMGM representatives if they were considering a credit card prohibition to reduce potential fraud on their platforms. Caputi confirmed BetMGM had a plan in place to phase our credit card usage, and Loney went into greater detail.

“In the coming days, as of March 31, we will no longer be allowing new credits cards to be added to the accounts for individuals and it is a phasing out of credit card usage on the BetMGM platforms,” she said.

A BetMGM spokesperson confirmed the gradual phase out of credit cards, but offered no additional details on the plan.

BetMGM Joining Other Operators in Prohibition

BetMGM will join both DraftKings and FanDuel in a prohibition of credit cards. DraftKings announced its credit card prohibition in August of 2025, for both its sports betting and iGaming platforms.

A DraftKings spokesperson described the prohibition as a “strategic business decision” and noted the majority of the company’s customers do not use credit cards to fund their accounts.

FanDuel announced its own credit card prohibition in early February, instituting a nationwide prohibition beginning March 2, 2026.

“Over the last few months, FanDuel has been evaluating the payment methods that we offer to customers and made the decision to remove credit cards as an option for our sportsbook, casino, and racing product in the United State. This change was made to improve our deposit experience for our customers,” a FanDuel spokesperson told Sports Betting Dime.

Several States Considering Credit Card Bans

Several states are considering legislation to ban all credit card account deposits for sports betting and gaming purposes for any licensed gaming operator.

Currently, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Vermont all have prohibitions on credit card account deposits.

New York Assemblyman Robert C. Carroll (D-44) recently introduced A7962, a bill to prohibit credit card use for online sports betting account funding in the Empire State.

New York’s neighbor to the south, New Jersey, is also considering a ban on credit cards. Sen. Paul D. Moriarty (D-4) recently introduced S3461, a bill to prohibit credit card use for online sports betting or iGaming account funding.

Virginia legislators are also considering a similar bill this session. Del. Marty Martinez’s (D) legislation, HB 515, was approved in the Assembly by a 94-3 vote in January and the Senate earlier this month.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) has not yet signed the bill into law.
