Game 3 of the Hurricanes vs Senators series goes down tonight, with Carolina looking to take a 3-0 series stranglehold. The contest features a 5.5 goal total for the third consecutive game, and while I correctly backed the under in the first two matchups, I’m going to zag in that market in Game 3.

My favorite bet tonight is over 5.5 goals. Yes, the under has cashed in the series first two games, but under bettors like myself were extremely fortunate that Game 2 stayed below the total.

Through the first two games of all eight series in the NHL Playoff Bracket, Carolina and Ottawa rank first and second in expected goals for during 5-on-5 play. The teams have played at a blistering pace, racking up 124 scoring chances at even strength, with 51 of those being of the high danger variety.

Carolina has under performed its expected goals total by nearly 4 goals, while Ottawa has fallen over 4 goals shy of its expected mark. Special teams wise, both teams have also underwhelmed, scoring just 1 powerplay goal between them over 13 combined opportunities. Not exactly the efficiency you’d expect from two top-7 units with the man advantage over the regular season.

So what’s been the issue? In short, both Linus Ullmark and Frederik Andersen have stood on their heads. Neither goalie excelled during the regular season, but it’s been a different story in the playoffs. Ullmark has already saved 4.6 goals above expectation, while Andersen has stopped 59 of 61 shots. The ladder netminder posted a save percentage of just .874 during the regular season, while Ullmark wasn’t that much better at .891. To say regression is coming would be an understatement.

I’m banking on that regression smacking both goalies in the face this evening, paving the way for this game to go over the total. The Canes and Sens were two of the 11 highest scoring teams in the league this season, with Carolina ranking behind only the Stanley Cup odds favorite Avalanche in expected goals for.

Moving over to the NHL props market, where if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I’m betting over 2.5 shots once again for Andrei Svechnikov, after he sailed over the number in Game 2 for the fifth straight outing. Svechnikov has yet to find the back of the net in this series but it’s not for a lack of trying. He racked up 7 shots on goal last time out, after recording 6 in the series opener.

The 26-year-old leads all Hurricanes skaters in scoring chances created over all strengths, and averages over 20 minutes of ice per game. From an eye test perspective, you can clearly see he’s looking to shoot whenever he gets the chance, and we have to keep betting this line until oddsmakers adjust.
