Former undisputed light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (24-1) makes his long-awaited return to the ring against mandatory IBF title challenger Michael Eifert (13-1). Bivol will stake the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO 175-pound titles against Eifert in his first fight in over a year.

After over a year away from the ring, all the questions will be on Dmitry Bivol’s side. How will the 35-year-old look in his return from a 15-month-long layoff, which included reconstructive back surgery? How will he handle the pressure of fighting in his home country for the first time since 2021?

In his prime, Bivol likely walks through a guy like Eifert with relative ease. Eifert likes to out-box his opponents behind his potent jab and clean footwork, but nobody is better in those departments at 175 pounds than Bivol. Eifert thrives when he can settle into cruise control and seemingly struggles when he falls behind, which is where he will likely find himself against the champion.

But given what Bivol has gone through in the last year, the odds of him returning to form from the opening bell are slim to none. Eifert is not necessarily a “tune-up” opponent, but there is a reason Bivol is not jumping right back into the fire against Artur Beterbiev or David Benavidez.

In a battle between two fighters with very similar styles, Bivol is simply better than Eifert in almost every area and has faced the much stiffer competition in the last decade. Although he is being set up for a big performance, the Russian has just one knockout in his last 12 fights and will take longer to settle into this fight than he typically would.
