Every offseason, sportsbooks hang a number on each team: the points they’re expected to finish the regular season with. This page keeps every past line in one place, next to what the team actually did, so you can see which projections held up and which missed badly.
This page collects past seasons’ totals with the prior year’s finish for context. Two seasons ran short: 2019-20 was paused at roughly 70 games per team, and 2020-21 was a 56-game schedule, so their numbers sit well below the usual 82-game range. Totals for 2022-23 aren’t archived here.

- Carolina opened with the highest total at 109.5 after reaching the Eastern Conference Final and adding Michael Bunting and Dmitry Orlov in the offseason.
- Nine teams carried a projection above 100: the Bruins, Hurricanes, Avalanche, Stars, Oilers, Devils, Rangers, Leafs, and Golden Knights.
- San Jose held the lowest projection at 66.5 after trading Erik Karlsson to Pittsburgh and entering a rebuild.
- Boston had the biggest gap between projection and prior finish. After a record 135-point season, the Bruins were pegged at just 101.5, largely a product of Patrice Bergeron’s retirement.
2021-22 NHL Point Totals
The league returned to an 82-game schedule. Colorado opened with the highest total at 111.5, with Tampa Bay and Vegas next at 107.5. The reference column shows each team’s 56-game total from the shortened 2020-21 season, so the prior-year points read unusually low, and expansion Seattle had no prior mark.

2018-19 NHL Point Totals
Expectations were sky-high for Tampa Bay, whose 106.5 open was the league’s highest, and it still proved far too low. The Lightning stormed to 128 points on a 62-16-4 record before getting swept in the first round. At the other end, the rebuilding Senators couldn’t reach even an NHL-low 69.5, finishing with 64.
