After nine consecutive super flyweight title victories, Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez seeks two-division champion status as he prepares to challenge WBA bantamweight titleholder, Antonio Vargas. Rodriguez vacated his old 115-pound belts ahead of the title challenge as he looks to continue moving forward with his career.
Rodriguez, who began his professional career as a strawweight, is moving up a weight class for the fourth time. The pound-for-pound star continues to take progressive steps toward a potential super fight with Naoya Inoue in 2027.
Jesse Rodriguez vs. Antonio Vargas Prediction
- Rodriguez vs. Vargas Over 1.5 Knockdowns (-140 on FanDuel)
Antonio Vargas is a serviceable bantamweight champion who faces the unenviable task of welcoming ‘Bam’ to his new weight class. Vargas is more than capable of stacking title defenses, but, like most fighters at 118 pounds, is nowhere near the level of Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is the better boxer by nearly every metric. He will have faster, more accurate hands, better footwork, more power and superior defensive skills. This is the ideal intro fight for Rodriguez against a champion who has hit a rough patch despite riding an 11-fight unbeaten streak.
While Vargas has avoided defeat since 2019, he continues to fight on thin margins and tempt his fate. The 29-year-old has now been knocked down in three consecutive outings before rallying in the later rounds to claw his way to a comeback. His grit is admirable, but that game plan only works for so long and historically has failed against elite fighters like Rodriguez.
Vargas’ subpar chin faces a terrifying test against the speed and power of Rodriguez, who has six knockdowns in his last four fights. The Puerto Rican has still proven he has the heart of a lion, suggesting ‘Bam’ will have to force him onto the canvas more than once to get another knockout victory.
The porous holes in Vargas’ guard continue to get him in trouble and are too wide to get past a fighter like Rodriguez. ‘Bam’ will find the mark early and often and put the champion down at least twice before claiming another division.
Arturo Cardenas vs. Jordan Martinez 2 Prediction
- Jordan Martinez (-132 on FanDuel)
Four months after an underrated classic, Arturo Cardenas and Jordan Martinez are running it back in Arizona. The then-unknown Martinez made the most of his surprise opportunity in the first fight and put on a performance that many felt was deserving of the victory. The fight ended in a draw, but Martinez still impressed enough to earn a full Matchroom Boxing contract.
Nobody is doubting Martinez anymore ahead of the rematch. The 23-year-old’s athleticism and speed had Cardenas stuck in the mud for the first two rounds before the Mexican found his timing and fought his way back to a draw, remaining undefeated. The rematch will now be decided on whether Martinez can implement the same movement-based game plan on the flat-footed Cardenas, or if his 25-year-old foe can settle into the fight quicker to gain the upper hand early.
Once Cardenas began timing Martinez’s entries, he found more success with his combinations as he moved forward. However, at his core, Cardenas is still a counter-puncher whose natural style plays directly into the hands of a high-volume fighter like Martinez.
Martinez’s cardio was a minor issue late, but he did not fade nearly as much as many expected. In a high-octane battle between two young fighters with sturdy chins, back the quicker fighter with more volume and better ring generalship whose style is better suited for this particular matchup.
Elif Nur Turhan vs. Gabriela Tellez Prediction
- Elif Nur Turhan by KO/TKO (+105 on FanDuel)
Expect a car crash in the first women’s title fight of the night. If there is one thing Elif Nur Turhan and Gabriela Tellez have in common, they are both looking to march forward and land big bombs on their opponents and do not care if they have to eat a few shots in the process.
The 19-year-old Tellez is the better boxer, but she makes her money by applying constant pressure and imposing herself on her opponents. Tellez’s aggressive fighting style allows her to overcome the physical disadvantages she typically faces as a 5-foot-3 lightweight. Her shorter frame gives Turhan a five-inch height and six-inch reach advantage.
Unfortunately for Tellez, walking forward and engaging in a firefight is exactly what Turhan wants. Where the Turkish titleholder lacks in technique, she more than makes up for it with her power and ability to turn every fight into a brawl. Turhan’s defense leaves a lot to be desired, but she carries uncanny power in her hands and fights like it.
Tellez has the skill to out-box Turhan, but at 19, her discipline will be tested. Both boxers want to force their way into the pocket, where nobody has had much success against the champion. Tellez will make an impression early until Turhan finds the button to retain her title.
